Savage FV-SR threaded muzzle

So I have to questions pertaining to this rifle in the title:

1) What are the thread measurements on the muzzle?

2) I know that it is illegal to cut a barrel shorter than 18", but if the barrel was already manufactured shorter than 18" (in this case it is manufactured 16.5") is it still illegal to cut it down? For example, if I wanted to remove the threaded portion of the barrel and recrown it to make it a plain 16", is this legal?

X2 on thread pitch... 1/2"X28 TPI
X2 on cutting the barrel (even to remove the thread shank)... Illegal

Why would you want to do that anyway??? Just buy a cheap configuration action and barrel it... or leave it at 16.5" and recrown.
 
P.S - if you have the barrel recrowned the benefit of the FV-SR is that the thread protector will serve as a crown protector also... attach the thread protector with blue Loc-Tite and remove with heat whenever you decide to crown again...

Thanks guys. In terms of why I would do such a thing the reason is this. I am putting together a .22 for my wife, so in this case the looks are as important as the function. I have a Boyd's Evolution stock that I would put it in. I have a BSEV and she really likes the fluted barrel. However since she of very slight build (think 5'3", 100lb) I wanted to go with a shorter fluted barrel for weight reduction and looks department. I know she wouldn't like the look of the thread protector, so I figured on removing the threaded portion and recrowning. Does the threaded portion of the barrel count in the 16.5"? I would think it should as it is still rifled inside.

Hoytcannon, your various builds in the evo stocks are actually what inspired this project. I was planning on doing something similiar to the "pinky build" you did for your daughter (I think it was your daughter) that I saw in another thread. I have the evo stock off my bsev (now sits in a tacticool) and it is the typical jacaranda colour scheme.

I get more PM's on my daughter's pinky build than any other build... I got a couple PM's today on it. I built a Savage 93R17 HMR in a Jacaranda EVO for my son... it is his favorite gun... very nice color. The FV-SR is actually a good base model for a light bolt gun because the barrel profile is more slender than the other "V" version guns, the flutes don't take off much weight as they are very shallow, but every little bit helps... our FV-SR's shoot best with CCI SV's, but are good with Wolf MT's also. For hunting CCI Mini-Mag HP's shoot the best of the HV stuff we have tried. Good luck with your build.
