Hi everybody, I'm looking for some info on an old savage. The gun has definitely seen better days, but I saved it from the chopping block out of curiosity. It's missing the stock forearm but otherwise seems complete.

It's a lever action savage. It is stamped:
"Savage Arms Co. Utica N.Y. U.S.A.
Patented Feb 7 1893, July 25 1893 Cal. 303"
Serial: 149xx

I've read this is a model 1895. Is this correct?
Also, it seems to be a single shot. Is that correct or am I missing something?

Here's some pics, sorry about the poor quality.

If you can give me any information on this gun it would be appreciated. I don't know if I will try to find some 303 savage and attempt to shoot it. The bore is hard to judge because it's filled with cobwebs

Where's Mad Dog when you need him?

Looks like somekind of Savage Model 95... but I'm no
expert. (I've only owned one '99.)

I take it that the calibre would be 303 Savage as well.

1899 "A" dom1901 .The rotor is visable does it turn?

Rich

Is it some sort of rotary mag in the receiver? It doesn't seem to rotate. I don't have anything to jam in there except my fingers though so I can't be certain.

It is a 1895 savage, looks like 26" barrel, condition looks poor so prbably $200 for value.According to book I got only about 8000 were made before the 99 came out.And yes it is a five shot rotary mag.

haha, yeah, free floating alright.

I can't get the mag to rotate. It doesn't look rusted but probably gummed up. Probably hasn't been shot in decades.

thanks for the info guys,
dh

Ok, I've been reading a bit more about it. Google found me some good information. I'm still unclear though, what's the difference between the 1895 and 1899 model?

Also, anybody know where to look for a forearm bit?
thanks,
dh

What you have there is a Savage Model 1899A. The year of manufacture is about 1901. The barrel should be 26"long and the rotor in the reciever should be brass. The butt stock is what we call a perch belly because of the slight curve in the underside. This model was produced from 1899 to about 1927. From the lookes of yours it has been well used. You could find a forearm stock on e-bay or at gun shows or even here on the forums.I would be very hesitant to fire this rifle until it is repaired and cleaned. If you do revive it , it will make a good shooter. If you decide to sell as is ,send me a PM. Have fun with it . Bob

If Mad dog doesn't turn up you will find lots of help at the 24hrcampfire as well. There is a whole forum dedicated to the 95 and 99's. Great crew there.

Does that rear sight flip up to a different leaf?

I agree it is an 1899A. Some stocks came perch belly as mentioned and others didn't. Yours looks straight to me.

At work out of town till the weekend, finally got ahold of the bosses laptop so I've got no email, just p.m.'s.

Guys, it's as stated above, an 1899!

1895's have a serial number under 10,000 and are my passion and I'm always looking for more of them if you know of one send me a p.m.;)
