it is a .303 and says it was patended feb.7 1893, july 25 1893 on the barrel. the serial number is 4###. can anyone identify this? i tried looking up the serial and it said it was an 1985 which im pretty sure is just the model not the date but i can't be sure again dont no much about lever actions

Yeah, you've got an 1895 carbine. Looks nice too. I'm not a Savage collector but there aren't a lot of those around. If you want to sell it there should be lots of interest on the EE.

im not sure if you can see it in the pictures but the stock is cracked so im not sure if that would bring down the value drastically or not and the front sight has been replaced but i will be looking into selling it after i clean it up as much as possible

Your carbine is quite rare! the only other configuration that is as rare is a musket!Round barrel scarce! Only 6000 1895's built by Marlin for Savage Arms(1895-99) , some recievers have a unfired round counter. Even in that shape your gun still has good value! You have a nice grandfather who left you a nice piece of history, enjoy! There will be Savage 99 gurus that can help you out more, cheers dale Z!

this does have an unfired round counter i must have forgot to put that in the description it also has a loop coming out the left side of the action not sure what it would be for though... connecting to a saddle maybe? not sure

Yes, the crack will hurt it but so will the sling eyes.

The saddle ring is missing to I think but I think K&E used to sell a replacement.

P.S.: don't clean it, it will hurt it even more.

And what's more, don't sell it no matter what. A great piece of family history there.
Wish my family had kept the beaters to pass down. Some are hard to replace.

Congrats, and take good care of the old girl. I'd concur with MadDog too, leave her just the way it is.
