Savage lever question

Friend has an old lever with a serial number of 15.799. What does the dot signify?. If we key the serial in on the Savage 99 Date of manufacture, it comes up as an 1895. It does not have a hole in the top of the bolt as any other 1895 I've ever seen. If I enter the number without the dot, it comes up as either a 1900 or 1901.
