Hey I have a savage lightweight storm in 308 and am having issues shooting with it. The recoil is very jumpy and hard to control even compared to my tikka t3 lite in 30-06 or my old 300 weatherby magnum. I think this is because the muzzle rise with the short barrel and positive comb.

Right now I have no confidence in my ability to hunt with the rifle. My plan is to get a clamp on muzzle brake from Coretac solutions to try and manage the recoil. I bought the rifle to be lightweight and have some power so I am not willing to add too much weight to the thing.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Also if someone has one in 308 could they measure the diameter of the muzzle for me at the end and one inch back? I am away from home right now and my partner looking after my place have never used a caliper.

^ Its not the fit. I have the same rifle in 6.5 and it is very jumpy at the muzzle due to the light weight and short barrel. I bought it for my daughter, so I am loading it down for her, but still jumpy with light loads.

I’m running hot 150gn SST handloads in it. I know I could load it down for deer and sheep but I do t feel confident for black bear or moose so I don’t want to reduce the loads. I’m going to try the brake first just need to get those measurements for the muzzle.

Plenty of Blk. Bear have been taken with 30-30 caliber and speed and even a few moose too maybe even plenty of moose.
Have you considered a soft cushy sumptuous recoil pad???
The light weight of the gun is the root cause of the recoil (with ammo choice as well).
I doubt a muzzle brake is going to reduce the felt recoil (but can be proven wrong).
Do some research not just here but with gunsmiths and the likes and in the end it is your money and how you choose to spend it.
Hopefully, it doesnt entail buying a gun a few weeks before hunting season.

i ve seen 3 guys at the local range trying to sight in a very lightweight 308 with a brake on it. do not remember the kind but it was like kryptek camo stock on it. ammo are part of the equation but the fit too as well as the ammo the rings and the base. is the stock rifle too short for you. if you make an angle with the stock against your arm where are you with the finger in the trigger group, farther or shorter.

anyway a lot in the equation.

good luck.

Yea I just see every ultralight rifle being built pretty much has a brake on it. It’s not so much the force of the recoil but the hop of the gun. I would like to put one on to stop muzzle rise. As for the stock. It is an adjustable stock so I made sure it fit before hand.

Realize that slower 30 cals can take big game but I still want to get decent performance out of that more powerful cartridge. You probably have an excellent point when it comes to smaller game and I am currently on the market for some lighter bullets. However I tried reducing by 5 grains of 4895 and it wasn’t much easier to shoot.

No need to buy a new gun. I always have my trusty tikka. It’s just a little heavier.

I came across some good material if other people in this thread are interested.

First is a forum on rockslide that describes a special technique for accurately shooting ultralight high recoil rifles

Another is a YouTube video on how to eliminate muzzle rise. This guy is a long range shooter so it’s a different application then hunting but it’s still interesting and explains why tikkas shoot so much nicer. Apparently tikka had the insight to put a negative comb on the stocks on their light weight rifles. This drives recoil straight back.

My conclusion is that the stock of the savage rifle is poorly designed for high recoil/light weight setups.
We are pretty much SOL on this because there are little to no aftermarket options that are lightweight for the savage. The cost of the ones that are available is greater than the rifle itself.

Going forward I think I will put a brake on and focus on holding down the front end of the stock. If anyone knows a reasonably weighted/priced stock for this thing let me know.

Update. I put a break on it and it is deadly accurate now. Or at t
Least I’m able to shoot it accurately. No more wild muzzle jump.

I have much better luck with lightweight rifles at the range when I hold the forend while it's on the shooting rest. Holds the forend down during recoil.

That's how I taught my son to shoot as the reduced muzzle rise also seems to reduce perceived recoil. When I was 13 my dad gave me an Enfield sporter with steel butt pad, took a while to unlearn flinching after that. With that in mind we went through the safe and fired off .22LR and .22WMR, .410 bore, and .223 over the summer to get him used to shooting and the mechanics of recoil with this hold. Almost time to find him a youth .243.

One thing i found when i first got my Ruger 556 ranch was it was quite unpleasant to shoot with the first handful of factory loads i put through it... not in terms of recoil obviously, but it was for lack of a better term "poppy, noisy and obnoxious ". Until i switched to heavier bullets and slower powder. Changed the recoil impulse from a jump to a push and took away the blast. Since then i have always tried to tune my handloads for the same effect. Makes short barreled rifles much nicer to shoot.

I have always used my sling wrapped around my forearm to tame muzzle rise.
But is the break is working. I poke no fun and swinging from the laidys tee. Lol. I kid I kid

The brake isn’t something I have to do or think about before taking a shot at an animal. I like to get out and hike while hunting so I don’t always get nice shooting positions.
