Well it is not out yet but I know I cannot wait! Anyone have any other info on this gun? 6.5X284 Norma sounds like the way to go but I hear that it eats barrels for lunch. I am leaning towards 300 win mag. At 8.6 pounds this one is a little heavy but still manageable. What are others thinking about this one??

I am interested but I am a little shocked at the sticker value...I was hoping they would be selling for around $750 CAD Max.

With a MSRP of almost $1000 USD they could be around the $1300 mark CAD.

I will have to wait & see what they retail for but if it is well over $1000 CAD one would be better off buying a used package gun, bedding the stock, getting a custom pre-chambered barrel from Mysticplayer, and an aftermarket trigger.

X2 and probably be more accurate to boot.

I don't see much difference in the design other than they slapped on an adjustable cheak piece to a regular stock and a 26" tube. Looks awkward and unconfortable.

HMMMM, good point about it costing almost $1300CAD I was not thinking about the conversion. Come to think about it the original article that got me into this gun (shooting illustrated i think?) stated it was going to be around something like $750 or so.

Savage package gun...................$465(NEW, could find cheaper used one)

Shilen Barrel(from Mystic).............$400

Timney Trigger(from Mystic).........$150

Adjustable cheek piece.................$80

Total......................................$1095

Now there might be some other costs say if you got someone to bed it and fit the barrel, which I think Jerry does, and cost of Muzzle Break. It would probably end up being around the same dollars in or a little less, but you would have custom barrel doing it this way vs. factory.

Also doing this way you could re-sell the package gun barrel, which would also offset the cost.

you are forgetting the stock. no sense spending $650 on aftermarket barrel and trigger if youre going to use the low-end tupperware Savage stock. for a bit more $ id be looking at something like the Remington 700 5Rs, Senderos, VSSFs, etc. stainless, HS precision stock, arguably better action, hinged floorplate, more potential in trigger/firing pin/magazine/safety/stock upgrades (both in terms of availability and mechanics since the Savage trigger design is less than ideal).

im certainly no precision guru, and i admire what Jerry has been doing with the Savage/Stevens, but part of that appeal is the easy change in chamberings and the low cost of the base action. once you start going over $1100 and intend to stay in a single chambering >IMHO< the Savages start to lose their appeal.
(^i even put f'n red arrows pointing at the fact that this is just opinion/preference before someone jumps down my throat)

Why not just re-enforce the factory stock and give it a paint job....we are talking budget build here.

What your talking about will take the rifle project to the $1800+ range or more? or am I wrong?

It's still a Savage, although it is slightly cool that they are chambering the 6.5-284.

I never understand posts like this. "It's still a savage". Why do people say this as if it is a negative thing. I have owned guns from lots of the big name companies and any savage I have owned has out shot the others. Now that they have the accustock and accutrigger they are top of the heap in my opinion. Plus they cost a few hundred less than the other guys. So in short I think the days of saying "it's still a savage" and other negative comments towards Savage are over. Don't get me wrong though, different opinions are a good thing. But when I read short little one liners about how it is still a savage etc it no longer computes. It is like saying it is a fast car but "it is still only a corvette" or sure he is a good ufc fighter but "he is still only george st.pierre"

I'm not a fan of that price at all.
Neat to see a 6.5-284 being offered though.
But I would rebuild it in 6.5x55. :D

its a savage is hilarious, mine shoots the best out of all my rifles, that is a cool looking rifle tho!in 338 lapua and it would be really sweet.

$1100 is not a budget rifle :)

the Remington 5R is around the same price. it was just an example to compare how much more you get for the money. a premium stock, premium heavy barrel, stainless throughout. and if you want to rechamber youll easily get a few hundred for the 5R barrel.

for that $ i would have expected Savage to put a decent stock on the gun, and stainless would be nice. i mean i look at that rifle and i see a plain old blued Savage with some barrel flutes, a cheap muzzle brake and a $60 adjustable comb for a ~$600 price increase. i like Savages, and there are a couple of them i still plan to get, but with this one i fail to see the appeal unless the entire point is that you really want a 6.5x284 factory rifle.

manufacturer SUGGESTED retail price.
and how often does anything in Canada ever sell for less than US MSRP?

IMO this is more interesting:
Savage 12 LRPV DBM
12lrpvdbm.png

fibreglass stock, stainless, heavy fluted barrel
built on the savage target action with the target accutrigger, but not single shot - with a detachable mag.
savage-dual-port-model-12-lrpv-review-009.jpg

SavageLRPV004.jpg

single port action but also available in dual port.

thats a Savage i would pay >$1000 for.

More like the fast car is still a Tiburon.

Cheap stocks, ugly action, lousy blueing, cheap unreliable parts, other than that they are great.

Three years in a row a earlier this decade different guys in our group shot deer with my backup guns because their POS "well maintained" savage rifles broke down. One a spring on the trigger broke, one the magazine follower broke and the third a brand new laminated stock broke at the tang. Sooner or later (except maybe as a target rifle) you will be left with a club in your hand at the moment of truth.

Why guys work so hard to convince us that cheap = good is beyond me.

Ya, Savage has Cheap parts, eveyone who has eyeballs can see that. But they have been gaining one hell of a reputation (and market share) due to price and the accuracy of their guns. Not to mention their willingness to pay attention to, and cater to, certain budding and growing areas of the shooting sports.

The biggest problem with Savage lately is the price of their guns has increased along with their popularity.
