Has anyone got an up date on going from the blind box to the detachable magazine for the Savage 12 series?

I read that it was in the works and already completed for the Remington 700, but what has happened with the Savage?

Thanks in advance.

keeping the thread going....:D

not sure, but I don't see why not, for my 10FP I was looking at it too, just out of curiousity

seems that the current blind mag if you are able to get your hands on the drop mag for your model and get the measurements done, plus take the stock off and measure the lands. You'll still need to make a mounting bracket for the detach mag

The new gen Savage already come with an excellent dmag set up. The center feed mags work great and will handle a 3.00" OAL cartridge. Also come in several LE models with HS and A5 stocks ready to go. There is rumor to have a Choate version soon too. Laminated stocks are also available as are stocks from Stockade.

Vbull is going to make something and likely based on the last generation bolt spacing. Stocks would have to be inletted specifically to fit.

So I did some asking around (dealers and gunsmiths) and we came up with an idea to make the previous version of the Savage with the blind box internal magazine (no floor plate) into a detachable magazine.

Its not cheap, but for me it looks like it might work.

First, the new Savages with the detachable magazine are the exact same as the ones with the blind box. So, if we take the trigger guard and bottom stock assembly from a new Savage with the detachable magazine and install it on the old Savage with the blind box, we now have a detachable on the old Savage.

But now there is no hole for the magazine. We can either cut a hole with a dremel to match the magazine, or in my case, order a new Savage stock. I want the new thumbhole anyway so I will probably do this.

Now I realize this is not the easiest way to make this conversion but I'm getting tired of waiting for the conversion kit that was supposed to be out last summer. I am also being told by some of the Savage dealers that the new rifles with the detachable magazines will not be available on Canada until late this year at the earliest. Two reasons, their import permit problems and second is the demand for the new style rifles in the states.

Now this will not be available to everyone, but if you're in tight with a dealer that happens to be a smith as well, they can order these parts from Savage without a problem. (so I'm told by my dealer)

Just a thought for some that are realy interested in having a detachable magazine for their Savage.

Thoughts? Am I missing something or is there a glaring error in our theory? Please feel free to comment.

Yes, you are missing a very big difference between the old and new actions. The Front action screw hole has been changed and the bottom metal will not bolt up to the old action.

You will need to plug weld, redrill, reheat treat the action. Big PITA.

Aren't there any FNCS rifles out there?

Once the factory demand ebbs for the new dmag, many stock companies will be offering ready to go stocks ie HS, McM, Choate, Stockade, Brownells, and Boyds.

Depends on how patient you want to be and how much metal/stock work you want to do.

Thanks... that's a big oops on our part.

We we're thinking since the space for the blind box and the dmag are the same size essentially, then the bolt pattern should match as well. My dealer/smith says he was told the new stocks will fit on the older, like last year's model.

The stock isn't the problem though, I just wanted a new one anyway so if we could have made this work then great.

But the dmag is the big thing that I want changed and I'd like to have it done before gopher season hits. They're already moving here in Saskatchewan, at least in the south near the US border.

Any other ideas...and what's FNCS?

Savage coding for plastic stock, det mag, blued.

You might be able to mod a new gen Stevens. They are supposed to be center feed fixed mag. Maybe the holes have been changed like the new Savage ??????

If so, then a floor plate and mag is all that you need to convert. The mag is controlled by the bottom plate and stock.

Even the trigger guards are the same.

I'll keep you all up to date on how things work, but I really wish there was an easier way since it might be a while until we see the new Savages here in Canada.

The Stevens did change to centerfeed as well, not sure if the 223 has caught up to the change yet but it will. Of course the early Stevens was not centerfeed. The long actions have not changed and they don't have to because there is enough space between the action screw and the front of the mag.

Cheers,
Rob
