Hey Guys,

I am looking at getting my first rimfire rifle and have mostly made up my mind about getting a CZ452 lux in 22lr, however yesterday I went to Eire Tracker and found a beautiful Savage Mark 2 BRJ V and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them? I havent been able to find too much information about that particular model, but have about the Savage Mark 2. So mostly i was wondering if it would be better to get the Mark 2 BRJ V (and support Canadian manufacturing to boot) or stick with the european CZ452 lux. Im not looking at getting both and would like the rimfire for bench and shooting in the wild. Also any recommendations on optics?

The 452 lux has a low comb and is meant to be used with the irons. You can of course scope it but the cheek weld will be a little off. The iron sights on the 452 lux are just fantastic....really really good. If you plan on shooting it mostly scoped, I'd recommend the cz american or varmint. Personally, I dont know why anyone would pay that kind of money for any savage rimfire when you can get a cz for basically the same price. The low cost savages, sure why not but when you start to get into the 500+ dollar area, there are much better options.

I agree with super7's comment about the lux. If you're even thinking about bench you'll want a scope, and the american or varmint would be better choices.

Also, you would generally want different guns for bench and carrying in the bush. Heavy is good in a bench gun, but is exactly what you don't want for carry. Any rifle with a heavy barrel and a laminated stock is going to be on the weighty side. I'd suggest deciding where you will use it the most and get a gun suitable for that purpose.

I've had good luck with Savages. The two I currently own are a BTVSS and an FTV. Both are extremely accurate and function perfectly. But I use the term "luck" advisedly. The brand name is no guarantee of quality. I've had guns from high end makers that were seriously defective right out of the box and had to be immediately returned for warranty service, or which were less accurate than far cheaper guns. Also, with .22s in particular the accuracy can vary a lot from gun to gun. It's one of the mysteries of the rimfire world.

Since this is your first rimfire you may not want to get into customizing just yet. But I would point out that with the easily installed Apache trigger kit you can bring the pull weight of a Savage (as long as it has an Accutrigger) down to about 1 lb. This makes for a beautiful target gun. I find the standard CZ trigger too heavy. But some of them have a set trigger or adjustable trigger. But whatever you get, consider trigger weight if you're interested in accuracy.

Overall I wouldn't agonize too much about it. Experience is the only really reliable guide. Get something you like and if it doesn't suit your purposes you can usually sell it for nearly what you paid and get something else.

I have both guns you talk about. Hands down the CZ is the better one to buy.

Excellent. Looks like its a search for the CZ again. Is it worth getting the 455 or just waiting/hoping the 452 shows up. I was honestly hoping to somehow use this rifle with both iron sights or scope. But I think I might be asking too much. I did want to get better at shooting with irons, however most of the guns I have are scoped. If I were to get the scoped version of the CZ, would you guys reccommend the Varmint or the American? Also what scope would you guys recommend? If I go irons would you recommend the Lux, ultra lux, supermatch or ultramatch (452 or 455)? Sorry for all the questions and thanks again guys :D.
