savage mark 2 btvs good choice?

Hi, I'm usualy not an impulse buyer, I went to the store to buy a marlin 795 and got out with a savage mark 2 btvss bolt action. Do you think it's a good rifle? It was 425 $ a lot more expensive than the 795 but a lot more gun. I'm going tu use it mainly for target shooting and maybe 2-3 tims a year for small game hunting. Do you think it was a good choice?

By the way its the ss model.

I love my BVTLSS(left handed, thumbhole stock). Been flawless since I first got it. Very precise even with a low end Bushnell 3.9 on it.

It's one of those rifle that I will never sell.
 
In my opinion, Having owned more than 6 savages both in .22 lr and .17 hmr... You cannot go wrong with a savage!

Savages are great value, and those stocks are snazzy! I think think they're better-suited to target shooting than hunting, but will do both well enough I'm sure. Congrats on the new rifle!
 
If they are on a bench they are alright. If you are going to be walking around with it dont even think about it. I had a few savages with boyds laminate stocks and walking with a 9+ lbs gun sucks.
 
I used mine to capture my class championship and best overall average this year. It shoots better than I can most days. I did however swap the stock for a more convensional one to make it conform to the rules.
I love it and it loves cci standard if that helps you narrow the ammo choice down. Hope you can find some lol.
 
Simly an awesome gun, please look up 6mmbr.com tactical rimfire competition.
It's a highly recommended gun!!!!
I love mine and wouldn't sell it even if its 12+ lbs.
Wish it had a larger mag though.
 
Purchased one myself and love it, it's a tack driver. One of the things about carrying around a 7 pound rifles gopher shooting it keeps you ready to carry your heavier large caliber hunting rifle for when its big game time.
 
I also have a BVTLSS. It is a very accurate out of the box shooter. with a change of bottom metal and installation of a rifle Basix trigger, it is a one holler. The stock bottom metal is very soft and it is very hard to maintain proper torque of the action screws. There are a couple of places that offer aftermarket bottom metal that is a lot thicker and does not flex, allowing higher torque setting and that really improves accuracy.

I was torn between that and the BRJ but I went with the BRJ because it will be easier out in the field for gophers. I love all the Savage Mark II rifles!
 
I love mine. It can be fussy with ammo tho, get quite a few bowling balls when i shoot Remington and Winchester. Best I luck I've had was shooting CCI Standard. Biggest complaint would be the thumbhole stock. As I have my rifle as low as possible to the bench, and my trigger elbow out to the side, I find that the thumbhole stock 'Forces' your wrist to conform to the grip contour, and after 100 rounds my wrist start to ache and it starts affecting my trigger pull. I think it would be better to have a more conventional stock that will allow the shooter to have a more relaxed, none contorting grip, at least for shooting from bench. The thumbhole stock offers tons of support, but I think is better suited not shooting from a bench allowing you elbows to be lower under rifle and taking the pressure off your wrist.
 
Just picked mine up a couple days ago! Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but it sure feels nice. Matches my .204 with thumbhole perfectly. I have found that the thumbhole allows for better shots from freehand. More noticeable is that I'm really stable with it when shooting prone (which is 99% of my shooting anyways). Sitting on the bench however I don't like it, it holds my wrist in a strange position that makes me wiggle all over the place. I don't buy my rifles to sit at the bench though so it doesn't matter :)
 
I have the same rifle and I love it. Put a good scope on it and buy some CCI standard velocity.

I've tried a lot of different ammo in mine and it likes the sv's the best.

As far as shooting position, I have a bipod on mine and use a rear bag. I find it very comfortable to shoot.
