Savage Mark 2 or Savage B-Series

Hello,

Looking for my first gun for plinking and potentially some vermin. I want to start with a .22LR bolt around $400.

Cabelas has the B-Series on sale for $370 including a scope. Or is it better to buy a basic Mark 2 on sale at Canadian Tire for $295 and putting on an after market scope on it?

If the Mark 2 is a better option, is the Mark 2 FV worth over the Mark 2 F?

What are your recommendations?

I also heard the Savage A22 mags work in the B22, is that true?

Well I'm no expert, I have never had a B series Savage but I believe the stock has a more comfortable shape and is stiffer than the Mark 2. I am not impressed with the Mark 2 stock (which I have owned) the forend is not stiff, the length of pull seems a little short, I think that Savage really cheaped out on the stock to keep the price down. The AccuTrigger is usually very good for a rifle of that price. Maybe your Canadian Tire has both and you can hold them side by side.
 
I personally own a Savage Mark II FV, I put an inexpensive Simmons scope on it and I am very happy with it. I use it for gophers/target shooting and I think probably have fired 2000ish rounds with mostly cheap bulk ammo. I have hit targets out to 150 yards and frequently shoot gophers at 100 yards. The heavy barrel is worth it, keeps everything from heating up too much and makes it easy to hold steady. I also like the AccuTrigger and find it to be very accurate.

That being said the stock is cheap and very plastic feeling, definitely not a perfect or pretty gun but it was a good starting .22 for myself. There are only 5 and 10 round magazines available for the Mark II, I have some of each and the ten round magazines are not perfect but they still work well.

I cannot speak for the accuracy or durability of the B series Savage so I will let someone else do that.

I would recommend the Savage Mark II FV with an aftermarket scope.

B-22 notes +

The Savage B series has the advantage of the rotary magazine which is flush rather than the Mk which hangs about 2" (in your way ?). The accuracy may be the same, tho the newer action design may be better. As well, the stock of the B is more ergo, unless you plan to spend a couple hundred for a repl stockb In either rifle, the FV is the better choice as it's a heavier barrel, giving less harmonic vibe and heat distortion.
I have the B22 FV with only about 500 rounds thru it so far, and I put on a Bushnell Engage MOA 6-18x50. I can often get under 1/2" @ 50 yds when nice weather. I just bought a Cabelas Covenant 4 6-24x50 FFP-SF to squeeze a bit more accuracy out of the B22, the reticle has a numbered MOA tree which should make shot adjustments simpler. The Bushnell has NO numbers. I'm using 'Medium grade' ammo (under $10/bx). I've found that SK+ and Federal Champion 40g SV really dependable, SV is best for accuracy - at least for short range. I'm planning to 'reach out' this Spring, so may try other ammo. Here's my setup so far, ALL my rifles need cheek riser for the 50mm scopes. " And as they say . . . YMMV "

Do you think the Mark 2 FV is a better choice, because I can’t find a b22 FV around me unless I order from Ontario.
I’m in Vancouver, Bc.
 
My recommendation is to get the Mark II with the iron sights - I have a Simmons 4x32 scope on it and I do not have to remove the rear sight - its made for it - once you learn how to shoot with iron sights - put a scope on it - if one day you think your scope is off and you have to go sight it in - and - you need your 22lr just take off the scope and your good to go. A huge benefit is that it is lighter - and the factory stock is good enough
 
MORE Important Notes

MrBo - I just got my BP/Cabelas flyer and saw the rifle. It's NOT a 'V', just a 'standard' barrel so that's a BIG deal !! And I got my rifle last Fall from ON (Flaherty's - Site Sponsor) for $339 + tx and FREE shipping. Most sites are free shipping over $200 or so. :d You'd be getting a better rifle for a bit less, and the scope that comes in the pkg isn't worth much . . . you can choose a better one that suits your planned use. I'd suggest spending at least $200 and maybe more if you really want to plan ahead. My Cabelas scope was on sale at $450. I'm Not going into competitions. :rolleyes:
The Mark II will be about the same cost, so judge the other issues . . . Ergo, Rotary mag, Accu-Trigger (Mine's under 2#), 'Modern Action'. Many people I've read about have changed the Mark stock shortly after buying - not-ergo? :eek:

I was looking at the Flaherty site and saw a B22-FV there that I may order and find a scope.

Is your rifle a B22 or Mark II?
 
I own a pair of mkII fvsr’s and a b22 precision. The feel of the former is classic, though the stock benefitted from sand in the butt. Yes, i heard what i wrote! Lol. But i did weigh it down.
The b22 has a better trigger and the chassis is a modern comfort with custom set up options. I am still exploring my b22’s appetite but the fvsr shoots very well.
And yes, the a22 mags are the same.

Hi MrBo - The B22 FV is the one I got from Flaherty, too. The V barrel is the heavy one, so less chance of harmonic fliers. The FV-SR is a couple inches shorter but the SR-part is pretty useless in Canistan. Your plan seems good to me. Just spend all you can afford on the scope, so you'll be prepared for the 100 yds shots ;-P The Cabelas scope I got has numbered (many are NOT) MOA hash marks and is FFP with Side Adjustment of Parallax - a bit over $500 with tax. I'd suggest at least a 4-16x50 w/ Vortex Low rings (ca $90 @ Cabelas). The C. salesperson sold me on High rings when I said 50mm, but I had to take them back cause the scope was about 3/4" above the barrel. Oh, well . . .

B-22 Accuracy in the cold

Hi Once more :rolleyes: I was looking at some pics of last year's shooting and found this 'sampler' I shot just b4 Christmas. It was cloudy and 2-3*C, but light wind under 10km. Only the second or third time out with the B-22 and I shot various ammo at 50 yds. As you see, the Fed Champion 40gSV (Not 36g HV) and the CCI 40g-SV were best that day, with S&B-SV almost as good. FBP is Federal BlackPak from 2019 Sale 1600 rnd pak 36g-HV, Rem Golden 40g-HV. Both of those started high on target due to HV when scope was z-ed for SV :rolleyes:, but as I compensated got down to the bull. If the ammo was warmer (and me too ;) ) I prob could have shot a bit better. Hoping to get out soon, snow is melting away and soon the range will be open. :eek:

Hi Czy - Some people have trouble with them. I have 3 and I can load mine as fast as my stick mags. They have a 'sharp edge' in the loading gate, I filed that down and maybe that helps loading ? i do wish they could make a loader for them like the 10/22 has (if that works right- heard not always OK).

I also have a Savage Mk2 FV and I’m very satisfied. Lots of rounds thru it, accurate enough for my needs and skills. Accutrigger is enjoyable to use and magazines can be found almost everywhere guns are sold in Canada including CT.

A MDT chassis is on my wish list ;)
 
I have had many 22lr and the one I use and have great accuracy with is the mark 11 svf,had a problem with the extractor so savage sent me new springs within 10 days.love the accuracy for the price.
 
100% Savage Mark II. It is one of the best value and bang for the buck (no pun intended) rifles I have ever purchased. Teaching my daughter how to shoot with it. It has been reliable beyond belief, and has shot ammo without issues that my 10/22 does not like.
