Looking to get a second .22 for my wife and son..Weight and accuracy are issues...My pimped out Ruger 10/22 does 1/2 groups at 50yds but the beast weighs in at just under 9 pounds.

Looking at the Savage Mark 2 .... Anybody here got any opinions.
2 questions..

Does the bull barrel really make that much of an improvement in accuracy, the rifle will mostly be fired free hand?

Is the non-bull barrel set up for scope mounts or do you have to have some work done to it?

Cheers

Have the MKII in the standard barrel config and the reciever is grooved for scope mounts so no modification is needed. It has the synthetic stock and it is really on the light side, even when I had a 4x scope on it. Accuracy was not really measured but it did hit what I was aiming at. One quible is that the old trigger was kinda on the rough side but the new ones being made are available with the accutrigger so that would be a model to get.

The Mk II has a grooved receiver to take rimfire scope rings. Accuracy is quite good, especially with the Accutrigger. The sub-$200 price is a nice bonus.

I have a standard barrel mark-II with basic wook stock and accutrigger. This particular gun is very accurate for the price in my opinion: the first group I ever made with it was ten shots (it has a ten shot clip), from sand bags with Federal ammo, and I could cover the group with a dime. It is nice and light too. Perhaps the youth model is worth considering?

I've got a Savage Mk II heavy barrel, pre-accutrigger with a grey laminated stock. Its a good looking and good shooting rifle.

Some of the lower priced models seem to be pretty rough. Have a close look at an specific rifle before you buy. It is also probably best to avoid the lowest priced models.
