How hard is it to disassemble a Savage Mark II pre-accutrigger? I've never taken a firearm apart before but am fairly mechanicly inclined. Do I need special tools?

This depends on how far you want to disassemble. If you just want to take the barreled action off of the stock for cleaning then no. If you want to remove your barrel and trigger assembly it is going to get a little trickier. There are not really any special tools required for basic disassembly, just a phillips screwdriver, maybe an allen key, and a couple torx drivers (scope rings normally). One thing to watch out for is putting it all back together. A slight difference in torque on the action screws can throw accuracy right out the window. So in this case a torque driver is nice to have. Something between the 10-50 inch/pound range works splendidly for torquing things back to spec.

Why ?

First of all, WHY do you need to disassemble your Savage Mark II?

Second, you really have NO reason for taking the barrel off the receiver!

If it is for cleaning, most parts of the Savage Mark II can be cleaned without a lot of disassembly. A spray can of automobile carburetor cleaner with the tube on it can reach into the smallest nook and cranny, but you should do this outdoors and use protection.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to reassemble the Mark II is that they get the extractors on the bolt reversed. The one with the sharp hook goes on the right and pulls the empty out of the chamber. The left extractor is a bit more rounded, and acts more to put pressure on the case so the right one can pull it out.

Use a bit of common sense, and you will be all right. Too many people try to take every last piece, screw and pin out of a firearm, and then end up in trouble. While you have the extractors and firing pin out of the bolt, then polish them a bit to remove any sharp edges. Take a piece of fine emery cloth, lay it flat, and put the pieces on it. Gently move them back and forth a bit to remove any roughness in these three pieces. The object is to smooth them up a bit, but not remove a lot of metal. Do not remove or polish the tip of the firing pin itself.

Besides your first two comments from your soapbox the rest of your post is informative.

I want to disassemble my Savage so that I have a better understanding of how it fuctions.

I never said that I wanted to remove the barrel from the receiver. Please read my posts again.

I was planning on being very methodical about taking it apart, taking pictures of it at all steps so that I had a visual guide for reassembly. I'm going to make a guess and say that seeing as I have a lefty bolt, the extractors would be reversed? I'll take a look later.

Where does a guy buy emery cloth? I know my girlfriend has emery boards, would that work or is the cloth better?

I've had my Savage mkII for over 10 years ( i think closer to 12) pre acuutrigger, and until a couple months ago i never took it apart and i never cleaned it more than running a bore snake down once in a while.

when i took it apart i was surprised by how clean it was inside considering i'd never done it before.

I took it apart for the same reason as you. A) i was bored and B) i wanted to see how it works!

good luck! it's not that hard really, there isn't THAT much going on in there.
