Savage Milano and steel shot.

I recently started getting interested in duck and goose hunting, and I was wondering how comfortable most of you would feel shooting a Savage Milano with 3 inch number 2's for example? I'm not sure because the gun does not have a proof mark for steel loads. However a few people I spoke including the sale-person (post-sale) said not too worry. If steel shot really isn't a worry, how large of a pellet shot can I use and still have no worries about damaging the barrel? This being said I would have modified choke in the barrels.

Thanks

I shoot BB's for geese through my modified choke for pass shooting. that being said I am not familiar with that model but I am sure it would be fine. I have shot BB's out of a mid 70's remington 870 with a modified and have not had an issue either.

Pattern it with Imp Cyl and see how that looks.

If you're still unsure, contact Savage or look for a FAQ about it on their website.

Any gun with factory screw in chokes is compatible with steel shot. Steel has been mandatory since 1992 and this mythical question still looms. amazing.

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess the question to ask next is if all guns with factory screw in chokes can handle steel shot with no problems now or later on, why would some of the new over and under's be proofed for steel and some would not? A good example would be from the previous response. F.A.I.R's model 600 is proofed for steel, however even though the Savage Milano looks very similar and comes from the same manufacturer it does not carry the proof mark for steel shot.

Also, doesn't the thinner wall thickness of over and under's have something to do with the reason why some people are unsure about putting steel into any over and under?

You need not worry about shooting steel in a modern gun if you stick to the standard loads and the open chokes. The "fleur de lys" proof mark you are looking for pertains to higher pressure steel shotshells (high velocity, hyper velocity, etc.) that have become the lastest fashion. The "fleur de lys" proof mark has not been in use for all that many years, therefore, many shotguns will not have the stamp in question. They are, however, still safe for use with steel shot. If the idea of shooting steel shot thru your gun concerns you that much I would recommend you find some Kent Tungsten Matrix loads, which are safe to use in all nitro proofed shotguns...new or old.

Thanks for all the replies. Next time I go out for for waterfowl I'll enjoy it even more because there will be no worries.
Thanks again and good hunting.
