Just wondering...shot my new mk 11 bull barrel today at both 50 yards and 100 yards...the more i shot, the groups did get better...shot about 100 or so rounds today, but the best group i could muster off of a sandbag rest with a 10.5 power scope was 1 7/8" at the 100 mark...most of them were not as good as that...wind was less than 15km/hr...can i assume there is going to be a break in for the gun or ????....shot some bulk federal, a couple of others and even some eley target rifle...other than the target rifle printing much lower the group sizes were not all that much better...any comments...

thanks

Wayne...

Could be the wind, especially if it is a little gusty.

I started a thread a while back on MKII accuracy. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=367574

I shot my MKIIF on a calm morning and it easily did 1 inch to 1.25 inch, 5-shot groups at 100 meters, with Winchester Dynapoints. With slight wind on different days, groups did open up to 1.5 - 2.0 inches.

I don't know about barrel break-in because my MKIIF was used when I got it.

My CZ452s were bought new but that was so long ago I don't even remember what size groups I got then:redface: Today, both CZs (Varmint and Style) deliver similar groups with the same ammo, same wind conditions, as the MKIIF. I'd say accuracy is a toss-up between Savage and CZ.

You're welcome.

Just a bit of unsolicited advice. If you are not doing it yet, try using two sandbags, one under the forestock and another under the butt. I found that eliminated some body and breathing vibes.

Lightly holding the stock with your off-hand, a very light grip with the shooting hand, and as well very light pressure on the cheek weld/piece will introduce fewer bad vibes as you squeeze the trigger.

Give it 500 rounds or so before starting to judge it.
It can only get better, right?
Hardly even broken in. IMHO.

My savage setled down when I dusted off my first bulk box so that is 500 + rounds. It will get better. New she was 2" group at best at 75 yards. She halfed that when she settled down adn then I bought a real nice scope and she came down a bit more. My 17 hmr took alot less to break in, 150 rounds or there abouts.

My Savage did not show any improvement in group size with more shots down the barrel. I really don't think there is any such thing as a barrel break in with lead bullet rimfires.

Wind is likely your biggest issue. The .22 LR is a bit unique in that subsonic velocity loads (almost all target ammo is subsonic) drift about 50% less at 50 yards than high velocity ammo. In a 16 kph wind, drift of target ammo is about 1". HV ammo is about 1.5". At 100 yards it is much worse. You double the distance the drift becomes 4 times, so 4" drift for target ammo and 6" for HV ammo.
