After five years working in the composite industry I have been fortunate enough to receive free training in the engineering department (CAD design). This got me thinking...what can I do with this? Then it dawned on me...new stock for my savage! I designed it in CAD and built it with carbon fiber...

The best part is, I was able to use scrap material from my job...all said and done this project cost me $10.

Awesome! did you vacuum it? doesn't look pressed... any aluminum inserts etc?
looks like a heavy twill.
poly or epoxy..

great job! you work with canoes or airplanes?

Thanks,

I did vacuum it (epoxy resin)... There's no aluminum in this, if it were more than a .22 I would have used some
I had cnc cut a mdf stock which I then wrapped in carbon and infused. I would have preferred to make a mold, but that's costly, and when you've been given the green light to do this on company time, it's probably best not to push your luck :)
That said, I may just make a mold off this one and make another...who knows...

that's awesome! I was thinking about the mdf being heavy... but that's even better, and cheaper for a core! just time consuming...
if you make a mold you could probably source some type of heavy 'resin additive' into the resin to do the opposite of the '3M-glass-ball-microsphere-stuff' for weight reduction, or mix something similar into a foam injection. lead balls maybe? but might be inconsistent if you can't get them distributed evenly.

The mdf did add more weight than I would have wanted, but I'm not carrying it through the bush,so not a big deal...of course if I were to make more of these I would take that into consideration...
Learned a lot from this at no expense, so future builds should benefit :)

I'm betting you could sell few of those around here... nice job. A heavy MDF core composite bench-style stock would be the cats azz for a lot of the guys trying to make their Savages shoot tiny groups... any idea what an approximate commercial cost would be on that?

I've actually been thinking about trying to start a stock making business for a while...the problem is the machining costs...that mdf core was about two hours to cut on the cnc (outsourcing this would be near $100 an hour)
That said, there's maybe $100 worth of carbon used in this...
A commercial carbon stock would be close to $1000 because of the machine time and mark up on carbon...realistically, if I had my own cnc (which I will be getting in the near future) I think I could price it around half that...how's that for a non-committed answer?
Also, once a mold was made this could be done for a lot less with fiberglass. But carbon is way more ###y...

Many would pay $400-$500 for a bench stock inletted for a Savage bolt action rimfire... virtually nobody would pay $1000 for a stock and then drop in a $250; barreled action... if you could get the retail cost down to the $400-$500 range you would make some sales... if the retail cost is $1000 then you better inlet for an Anschutz action... but that is already a flooded market.
