Savage MK II TR vs. MK II FV-SR, any input?

Hi all,

saw and handled at WSS a Mark II TRR-SR and a Mark II FV-SR. They wanted $510 for the TR and $229 for the FV-SR. I really liked the stock on the TR, but hated the 3 sided picatinny setup. As I understand it, the stock is just a Boyds Tacticool stock (which they won't ship to Canada anymore). So, aside from the extra 4.5" of barrel and the stock, why is the TRR-SR almost $300 more than the FV-SR? Am I missing something? In the Savage catalogue, I see a Mark II TR, but WSS doesn't stock them. Does anybody know who does, and for how much? I don't seem to see them at my local stores, Reliable or Italian. Do the owners of any of these have any thoughts on them?

I have a hunch allot of that extra cost is going to the stock. The rest is "tactical upcharge". lol The plastic stocks Savage puts on their rimfires pretty much are the bottom of the heap of what's out there. I should know..I have 2 of those stocks sitting on the floor in the corner of my "man cave". Poor geometry if you plan on using a scope, and since the FV-SR hasn't got iron sights...

I have 2 friends (one in Ontario, one in Alberta) who have the 17HMR TRs (no rail) and although I've tried...neither will sell me their rifles. :) That said, the only time I ever held an FV-SR I had an overwhelming urge to buy it. :)
 
Customer have to pay for the extra 4.5 inches on the TR barrel + the Tacticool Stock + the rails and the rest will be marketing (co'z it looks Tacticool then Savage has to charge extra for it).

I'm pretty sure the guts of the TRR-SR will be exactly the same as the FV-SR

Bought my TR at Cabelas Canada. None of the local stores in GVRD has any in stock when I was looking for one a few months ago.
 
i have a fv-sr that i got with the basic black synthetic stock and re stocked it with a btvs wood laminate stock added and rifle basics trigger a harris bipod and a hawk 6-24x44 scope, glass bedded it and added a ak74 muzzel break for a second kinda cool(which actually helped with sight picture during fireing) and i dont see the need for the extra 4.5 inches of barrel ive read alot of forums and articles talking about how the max needed to get the max velocity and stabilization of a .22lr is 16 inches so the extra is just marketing in my mind and after shooting against guns with 22-28inch barrels i can tell you the 16.5 will hold its own and win. my.2 cents
 
The FVSR at 229$ is an excellent bargain. Thats what I paid for mine, when holding the TRR SR I found it too heavy for what it is. You will not be disappointed with the FV SR, and you can keep an eye out for a stock and upgrade it in the future.
 
I have the Trr-Sr in .17 but only because I really wanted the Tacticool stock as I plan to use it only for bench rest shooting. If your not all horny over the stock like I was, buy the Fv-Sr. The Fv stock sucks but that rifle would look great in a boyds pepper laminate thumbhole and with the 22lr the shorter barrel will add volocity and mabey accurasy.
 
I've got a TRR-SR that I quite like. But....
1- The stock is painted wood, if it matters to you. The size and shape are almost identical to my B&C on my 700.
2- The goofy looking rail will fly around 60 feet if you throw it overhand. EGW makes a nice 20moa replacement that Jerry can supply for you.
3- It is an awesome shooter, but worth the premium, I don't know.

Agreed! I like my FV-SR alot! It's one heck of a bargin considering it IS Canadian made!!!

Buy both, put the TRR-SR in the tupperware box that the FV-SR came in, drop the FV-SR in the tacticool and sell the TRR-SR for a good price to another gunnut! Even in that crappy plastic stock my FV-SR was a tack driver. I paid $269 from Corlanes for mine so $229 is an awesome deal. Why are you still here? GO GET IT!
 
Got a TR as a silhouette gun. Best group I've gotten was 0.6" @ 100m. Easy to do under 1" @100m. No idea how the other model you mention shoots. This is shooting target ammunition.
 
I have the MKII TR, a MKII FV-SR that came with a Tacticool stock and tri rail (both from the factory - a custom build) and a MKII FR-SV in the factory plastic stock and the MKII TR is hands down the most fun to shoot with the MKII FV-SR Tacticool & Trirail 2nd and the MKII FR-SV coming in 3rd however the latter is by far the lightest and handiest for field work. I really can't account for the price difference between them but they are all good rifles and are accurate.
 
My FV-SR's barrel was junk and it took Randy's Gun Repair of NB almost (8) months to replace the barrel. I've only had the rifle out once since getting it back and it only shot marginally better than before so I have my doubts on the claim that the barrel was in fact replaced. Lies and half truths are what I've come to expect from this gunsmith.
 
Youre still dealing with that? I would of thought Savage would have taken care of you.

I was told by Randy Doucet that Savage would just outright replace the rifle as it would be more feasible for them to do that as opposed to replacing the barrel. Many weeks go by and then the guy claims Savage wanted to just replace the barrel and he was waiting for it. He got the barrel in early June and didn't get the rifle back until early November.

I seriously have had "zero" luck with new firearms purchases. The last (4) I've made have all been defective in some way. One of back to my latest purchases, a JR Carbine I bought in January, broke while I was cleaning it for the first time. It hasn't seen a round fired. I was dicked around by the CGN dealer I bought it from and I'm now back to square one trying to deal with it.
