the savage mk2's accuracy is well documented-but is there any diference in accuracy depending on which stock it comes in?Does the plain synthetic stock shoot as well as the one with the high end thumbhole laminate stock?

While I have'nt done a SxS comparison, my composite stocked 93R17FV makes a VERY goog showing of itself. I kinda think that a base level of accuracy was settled upon by Savage when making these. I'd love to find out what my action in a laminale stock would do, all other variables being equal.
Cheers!!

I believe the stock on the synthetic is very low and some people report problems with getting a good sight picture as a result. Can be easily fixed but for the price difference I would go with the laminate as most report better results with it.

You can buy a laminate stock for fairly cheap for these rifles but you need to get new bottom metal if you buy the synthetic stock. (another reason the laminate is possibly a better deal)

The only thing I would make sure of when buying any Savage Mark II is try to get the newer E-receiver model if you can. Makes upgrades down the road easier.

Cheek piece and the problem is solved

Ya,I think Boyds has a thumbhole laminate stock for about $69[unfinished]might be worth picking up a plain savage mk2 and upgrading.I did that with my MARLIN 795

I think for bench shooting, the laminate and synthetic stock should shoot similarly. This is assuming everything else being the same, ie, barrel float, receiver fit.

The synthetic "feels" like it has a very slight flex when subjected to bending force, so perhaps when shooting offhand with a tight sling, there may be a difference between the two.

IMO, the bull barrel might be a bit more accurate than the tapered one, but really hard to say as the difference could just as well be attributed to the minute production differences/tolerances between particular rifles/barrels.

My MarkIIF can deliver 1.375" 5-shot groups with cheap Winchester Dynapoints on a good day....same as both my Style (tapered 22 inch barrel) and Varmint (thick 19" barrel) CZ452s.

Alberta BB, I beleive that cheek peice is homemade, saw it in another thread.

I ordered one from Mystic precision (link up top), it's 50 bucks and very sharp looking. just waiting to get it then install!

I don't think it is worth the hassle of getting a cheaper gun and then retrofitting a stock. For sure you want to get a heavy varmint barrel and AccuTrigger. If you go cheap then you will probably want to change out the plastic trigger guard for the metal one that comes on the BTVS, and you have the hassle of fitting an aftermarket stock. I've seen lots of issues reported in doing that. Some of the guns come without a recoil lug as well. All in all, I would just go with the BTVS right away. Has nice high cheek for a scope, and works well on targets.

Here is how I bedded my BTVS:

And here is how I got the trigger down to under one pound:

It shoots fairly well. Here are some groups at 25 yards.

those are really good articles you made. Thanks.

The laminated BTVS stock, is not very strong especially in the area of the rear action screw. I think the plastic ones are worse. If I was to bed it again, I would epoxy in a piece of fiberglass side to side beside the rear action screw, to give it some lateral strength.

The problem with an unbedded stock is that they can be quite sensitive to action screw torque. I found before bedding that mine shot best when torqued to 24 in-lbs. Groups opened up about 10% at 8 in-lbs, and 45% at 16 in-lbs. Pillar bedding takes that effect away. I just crank the screws down quite firm now -- probably around 30 in-lbs.

Stock style will not materially affect the accuracy of this rifle. It will however effect how you shot this rifle.

so get a stock that fits YOU and how you are going to shoot it.

I have the mkII FV just for S&G and was floored by how well it shot out of the box, plastic stock and all. The engineering has greatly improved and given the narrow forend, it is very stiff. Certainly more then adequate for this rimfire and weight.

Off a bipod and match ammo, best groups have been in the 5/8" 5 rds at 100yds and 1 1/2" at 200yds. Average is sub 1" at 100yds and right around 2" at 200yds.

ZERO complaints on this plus a trigger that tunes up nicely and a bolt, after some breakin and tuning, cycles just fine.

I have a different stock on order just to dress it up and make it more like my FTR rig in shape.

I didn't see any factory stock that really turned me on (maybe the tacticool) so I went base model and with the TACPRO cheekrest, it has worked out superbly for me.

Thanks for the detailed range reports, gentlemen. I hope more guys would post their groups with cheap bulk ammo like the Winchester Dynapoints or Federal bulk packs.

As well, I wish everyone posting their great groups would always indicate the specific brand/type ammo used and the range (distance shot), like the above posters.

Here you go for Dyanpoints. Not great ammo and about 3/4" in my gun. Still it is my standard minute of gopher ammo. $18 per brick at Walmart when I stocked up.

Remington sub sonics do a little better.

Federal bulk is bad in my gun. I shot these targets for a cheap ammo fun contest, and Federal is a non starter. So no targets for that.

The earlier target I posted was Lapua Midas M, the best ammo I have shot. If I was to use that for the 50 yard targets there would be no comparison to the Dynapoint or Remington Subsonics.
