So got this thing a couple days ago, and mounted a Bushnell Trophy 4-12 x 40 AO scope on the factory bases and some cheap rings. I was planning on using a set of Leupold rings I had but they wouldn't fit the factory installed bases. Oh well, just a .22lr(or so I thought).

Anyways I know that ammo is going to play a huge part in the accuracy this thing puts out so i went and got a few various easy to find brnads.

CCI Standard Velocity
CCI Blazer
Winchester T22 Target
Federal Game Shcok 38gr Plated Hp
Winchester Xpert High Vel HP

Spent a few ours doing strings of 10, shots in various orders to be sure the barrel fouling and heating didn't play too big a role in the group sizes.

All groups are at 50m with a little bit of a crosswind that came and went. And those squres are less than an inch. ;)

Results were astoundingly different!

CCI Blazer: - Out of ten groups they ranged from great to average. Even the great groups were always hovering around half inch to 3/4 inches. Didn't seem to be that great, and were no better than my best with the 10/22 tactical target.

Winchester T22 Target: - Being just as expensive as the CCI I was very dissapointed here. Worst groups of all the rounds I shot, and interestingly the only marketed as target ammo. LOL

Winchester Expert High Vel. HP's: - Just about as bad as the T22 above. Again I didn't even bother to measure or take pics of these groups. Thye were all hovering around an inch, and again these did well in the 10/22 target I had, so I was dissapointed because they are about as cheap as it gets around here.

Federal Game Shock Copper 38gr Plated HP's: - These showed some promise, but were not as consistent as the CCI Standard Velocity. They produced a few groups with shots touching but the consistency was better with the CCI Standard Velocity.

Here is the best 3 groups with the Federal:

And the winner of the evening.....CCI Standard Velocity - I was amazed at the groups this ammo produced. This is why I bought this gun and exactly why I sold the 10/22! :D

I'll let the pictures speak for me:

And the best group I have ever put up with a rimfire ever:

And just for fun I shot a few groups at 100m, but the wind definitely had picked up at this point. My scope was not sighted for 100m so it was interesting guessing where POI would be. LOL

Best at 100m:

A Note: - I also learned that loading a new mag from an open bolt produced a first shot flyer almost every time. Got a tip to always load with a closed bolt then cylcle the round in and it worked.

Just a quick pic of the setup.

Only detracter to the economy model is that the stupid plastic stock it comes with has a cheek comb designed for a gun with iron sights.

A 30 strap on cheek pad solved that issue, but my scope is still a little high with these rings. It looks higher in the pics than it really is, and this Bushnell scope has a strange shaped adjustment ring for the AO so it has to be a little high.

Nice shooting, not surprised you're getting good groups with a Savage rimfire. :) Yeah, the stocks are ridiculous...but if you have fat cheeks like mine, no modification is required. I'll be replacing mine with a Boyd's to add a little heft (=steadiness)....and a little pride of ownership.

My groups look like this; (.22WMR)

interesting thing is i have the BTVS and the only ammo that thing will shoot is CCI Standard. i took it to the next level and weighed a brick and a half and the groups got considerably tighter.
hey its cheaper than the green tags and i have more time than money i just wish my CZ 455 would shoot as good

I always say CCI std vel is the best ammo available under $60/brick. Works very well in my MkIITR and my target pistols as well.

Never did get arround to weighing out some but may give it a try on cold winter nights _ weigh out a few 100 and fire for results HHmmmmm.

Nice Savage and nice groups! I shoot CCI standard velocity out of mine as well with the same results. Best ammo for the money sub Mach. Great practice for inexpensive trigger time!!!
