Hi
After cycling the bolt back on a savage mkii is it cocked and requires holding the trigger down while closing the bolt?
The manual doesn't really say if the bolt cocks on closing or opening

I have a cable lock through the bolt and mag well right now and not sure if the spring has tension on it when the ebolt is all the way back, or only when closed without holding the trigger down
What's the best way to make sure it's decocked before storage
Thanks:)

This is correct, just hold the trigger down while sliding the bolt in.
Standard procedure on just about every bolt-action.
A cable lock isn't the best option if you want the bolt in the gun.
I don't have my gun handy at the moment but I think you can de-#### the bolt seperately by rotating the back around.

thanks, i just wasnt sure if the savage mark II cocks on when you slide it all the way back, or if it cocks when you slide the bolt forward and push it down, since it seems to have a lot more tension when pushing the bolt down and all the way forward?

the manual says to pull the bolt right out, or to decock it to put the safety on, pull the mag out, slide the bolt back, then pull trigger firmly and pull bolt back, but you cant possibly do that until the safety is off, right?
well you cant take the safety off when the bolt is open, it has to be closed before it will let me move the safety, so the manual isnt that clear.
do you have to have the bolt closed with safety off before you can pull trigger and slide the bolt back and out?

similarly, you should have safety off and hold trigger when pushing the bolt forward and down to decock and store, then put the safety on?

It cocks when you close the action (i.e. push the bolt forward and lock it in place. When you pull the bolt out it will be uncocked and is fine for storage. There won't be any tension on the spring.

If you want to make absolute sure, hold the trigger when closing the bolt, then open it and remove. It is definitely uncocked.

i just bought this gun. It's my first bolt action rifle. How bad is it to leave the bolt open (all the way back) but still in the gun during storage? It didn't feel like there was any tension doing that. Any feedback is appreciated.

so if it has been cocked by closing the action and then you pull the bolt back (i dont want to pull it all the way out, just pull back until it stops so my cable lock is in) is that still cocked, since the trigger hasnt been pulled?
As you said, it would be best to take the safety off, hold trigger down while pushing bolt forward and down, then open it and slide it back before you put the cable lock in?

It's not cocked on closing, it's cocked on opening. If you remove the bolt, it is still cocked, no matter what you did with the trigger, since you have to rotate the bolt handle upwards to get it out, which cocks it. If you want to store it out of the action then once you have it out grab the front firmly, and rotate the bolt handle down to decock it. (I'd just leave it in the action, myself, closed while holding the trigger. Won't get crud all over it like it would bouncing around by itself in the case.)

So just to clarify when the bolt is open and I am going to store it or transport it I should turn off the safety, hold down the trigger and close the bolt by turning the bolt handle down?

I don't suppose this bolt has a position where you can just pull up on the handle until it's not quite all the way up, then pull the trigger to decock and the bolt handle falls back down on its own, does it?

My Mauser and Mosin both do that and it's cool. :D Also like this gun they are both ####-on-open.
