Savage MKII FVSR Comb Height

I'm looking to increase the comb height on my FVSR. I mounted the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 as low as possible but I still can't get the view I want with a firm cheek weld.

I'm considering either the Choate Tall Cheek Piece or the Tacpro Kydex Adjustable Cheek Rest but I'm open to any suggestions or recommendations.

Same rifle, same problem. I was thinking about just making myself something, they don't seem that difficult to do...as well as adding a butt/recoil pad to get something closer to a normal LOP.
 
Same here. I usually use foam underneath a shell holder sleeve. In for ideas! I did add a plastc spacer for longer lop. Id post pics but it looks like azz atm. I need to find a wider piece so it matches the contour of the stock. Just used what i had lying around to get the fit correct.
 
Yes...the Savage tupperware stocks are notoriously poor, but a Boyd's upgrade costs almost as much as the gun itself. My FV-SR~didn't want to dump that much into it, so, I tried an Accu-riser and it makes a huge difference. Light was poor so you can just barely see it. Second photo...just because I like it. :)

I have used the Tac Pro as well as made one from the Tac Pro do it yourself kit. Both work fine, just be careful drilling the holes. The shipped cost difference between the kit and the factory made is not a lot but if I order another I will order two kits to bring the unit cost down.
 
I just whipped this up. I used an old mouse pad cut into strips. The foam is dense and doesnt squash too much and really grips the stock. Slip a shell holder sleeve over and wolla! Perfect cheek weld. You can see my fugly lop spacer. I plan to carve a piece that matches the stocks shape. Now to get lower rings.....

This is basically what I did too. Bought a shell holder from Princess Auto, and took an old blue foam sleeping mat I had kicking around and cut a few pieces off of it. two 6" squares and a 6"x1/2" strip. The strip goes between the two 6" squares right at the top of the comb, and gives me a decent cheek weld. Not perfect, but better than nothing... And I too could probably use some lower rings, but whatever.

I want to get a boyds stock for it down the road, so I haven't done anything that really costs money. If I was keeping this stock, I would get the Kydex cheek riser because its adjustable, so if I wanted to take off my scope to use the iron sights for whatever reason, I could just lower the cheek riser.


22LRGUY, did you need to sand that accuriser at all? Fit the contours of the stock well, and the bolt cleared it no problem?

Nope, just screw it on. They supply rubber plugs to cover the screw holes when you're done. They require trimming, but did that with an Olfa knife.
 
I put a choate riser on my Rem 597 with boyd's stock. It needed a little filling. I used JB weld, rolled into a 'sausage'. When I tightened the screw, the excess JB Weld squished out and was trimmed back while still malleable. Once dry I finished it with some sandpaper. I also filled in the screw old with JB, because, OCD.

This was the low choate riser, and it matches the low-ring height perfectly, but, you'll see the boyd's stock already has a slightly higher comb than your FVSR stock (which I thought came with the same stock I've used here?)

That looks pretty good from here. Could you take a couple more pictures?

I was thinking about it but between the bolt clearance and the amount I could gain with lower rails I would still need something to raise the comb height. I'll see what I can find though.

Yeah, due to how far the bolt rotates you can't lower the scope enough to work. I can't work the bolt if the covers are on my scope, they get in the way.

The stock is designed for the base model with iron sights so it's basically impossible to get a scope low enough even if the bolt wasn't a factor. Building up the comb height is really the only option I can think of without buying a new stock.
