Savage MKII GL feeding issues.

As the title states, I'm having issues getting my Savage MK II GL to feed reliably. Some are smooth-as-silk, but other times, the ammo jams up when it leaves the magazine. Playing with the magazine feed lips doesn't help too much, as if you open them up too much, the round pops straight up instead of going forward. Note: This is a ten-rounder. I can't find my factory five-rounder, but I don't recall having much problems with that one. I've traced it to the straight bore (with no feed ramp), the lead round get "cut" by it, snag, and prevent closing of the bolt. Can a feed ramp be cut into these? Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. :redface:
 
Does that model have a detach mag? It sounds like the mag is sitting too high when placed into the gun. My marlin clip fed .22 was doing this, thats my suggestion.

Are you using the same ammo brand each time? maybe it just doesn't like certain ammo?

I know some .22 semi-autos can be fussy with different type of ammo, then others work fine.
 
I had the same problem with my Mark 2 FSS,what happened was I took it to a GunSmith and he ramped the chamber just a bit but it did not help Savage said they can void the warranty and not even look at the gun if they really wanted to but they were nice enough to seeing it was my first gun,here's what they told me the GunSmith should have done he should have taken the gun out of the stockand then with a peace of wood and a hammer drive the part that the clip goes into down just a little bit a the bullet is catching on the top edge of the chamber,if I were you try this first and just take it slow and don't bash anything to hard because Savage may not even try to fix the gun if you ramp the chamber,also you can try calling this number it is the number for Savage Canada 705 652 8000 ask for Dave Myle's or try his exstention 5109 he can be a bit hard to get a hold of but he is a really nice guy,they sent me a box by UPS or FED EX not sure witch and they even had another label in the box for pre-paid shipping back to Savage Canada.Don't worry if the gun is more than a year old just tell them you stopped using your 5 shot and all of a sudden it does not like your 10 shot clip.
 
Try pushing your mag up when loading and then trying pulling it down and see what solves the problems. Ive heard of both helping with the Savage Mark II's.

Also is the rifle fairly new? Mine did that lots when new then all of a sudden just stopped.
 
My MKII won't feed flat nosed rounds (xpert, 333, yellow jackets) never has since day 1 in both the factory 5 rounder and the 10 rounder. however, blazers should feed easily, so you do need to make some adjustments. BTW, blazers are the most accurate round I have tried yet out of my MKII, although I havent tried any expensive "target" ammo yet.. I found that with the difficult rounds, if i work the bolt back and forth very quickly, they usually will feed though.
 
Saw one of the range on Friday, the thing was jamming with Winchester .22 ammo.

Try Remington or Federal ammo, it seemed to feed fine through the guys gun.
 
I had feeding problems with my savage as well..My problem was with the sloppy clip 5 and 10 shot both were floppy when installed...I tinkered with the spring in the mag a little but the easy fix seemed to be to put a strip of hockey tape on the front of the clip to make a more snug fit...if you clips are sloppy try the easy fix first... it works perfectly for me..........

You might also check the extractors. The right one has a bit of a Hook on it, while the left one is more rounded. If the rifle has been disassembled, these can ge switched.

Take the bolt out of the rifle, then try sliding a round up onto the face, rim behind the extractors. It should go fairly easily, but snug. I have had to bevel and lightly file the left one so the rim would clear, and take a really sharp point off the hook of the right one to get proper feeding.

The extractors seem to grab the rounds fine (extraction is never an issue). I still have yet to pound away at the mag slot. I tinkered with the mag to no avail. I think I'll try a minor feed ramp. Ahh yes, the dremel bubba. :D



This rifle was purchased brand new, and has seen under 200 rounds, that I'm positive of. :redface:
 
Don.t ramp it. the problem is with the mag and the angle it sits to the bore.some things to try remove the action from the stock and loosen the stud that holds the mag spur there is some adjustment there.you can also gently tap the slide lips on the back of the mag to tighten it up on the mag spur.a long with adjusting the ears on top of the mag.ramping the bore is going to cause an unsupported section around the case and could cause case the case to split when its fired.if your not a tinkerer return the rifle to savage and have it fixed properly.
