Hi.
I just bought a new savage ML II . 50 cal. this muzzle loader claims to be able to take smokeless powder.
So im using the IMR brand that’s recommended on the savage website.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with this gun. I would like to know what bullet weight and powder combo’s group well as a starting point for this gun.

Thank you .

I have the same rifle as do two other friends. my load is 45 gr of IMR 4227 according to the manual behind a 300 gr. 45 cal hornady XTP in a mmp sabot. I took one deer this year with it at 100 yds. Bang flop. Of my two other friends one took a mulie and a whitetail buck and the other took two whitetails. Each one was a one shot clean kill. Five shots five deer and all dropped right away.

You have what is probably the most effective muzzle loaders on the market. Personally I have used 12 different BP guns in the last 20 years and the savage is the best in terms of an accuracy and knock down power. It will be my go to gun for BP season for ever.

Just follow the factory guidelines. Sight it in for 100yrds, practice at 150 and 200 to get to know the gun and your set to hunt. My rifle grouped 1.5" at 100M with the load mentioned and flies at just under 2200 fps.

sweet. thank you very much for the info. now i just gotta get to the range with it, sight it in and hoping ill be set to go for deer in the first week of dec' in WMU 82 A, cant wait, all excited.

I use 43 grains IMR SR4759 behind a 300gr XTP mag .452" bullet (this is a Savage recommended load) with Claybusters/Harvestors crushed rib sabots (very easy loading) and CCI 209M primers. That load shoots 1 1/2" 3 shot groups at a 100yds. and I can hit a 8" circle bull at 200yds fairly dependably too. I press about 30 to 40 lbs on the ramrod too - helps ignition I think. I've never had a misfire yet.

I use a 3.7cc Lee dipper scooped through the powder and shaken sideways and left slightly rounded - check it on your scale but it's pretty close to 43grs. of IMR SR4759 by mine.

43 gr IMR4759/250 SST's work well.
Go to Modern Muzzleloader.
Mega info on the MLII.

So what load did you use and how did you make out ?
