I am looking forward to getting into long range shooting. I have a Savage MkII FV on the way to use as a "trainer" to get my overall shooting skills up to spec. And since I have lots of time, I have already starting looking into my next long range rifle.

I was looking at the Savage Model 10 FP-SR in .308. From what I read its an excellent out of the box shooter, and the price seems not too bad.

Anyone have any experience on this rifle? How does it compare to the Savage FP? How is the rifle for a platform to build on?

I am more of a Milsurp guy so these fancy new rifles are beyond my expertise.

Thanks.

Other than not having the Accustock it looks pretty good. The stock wouldn't be a deal breaker either.

You're much further ahead getting the hs of mcmillan version. The factory stocks are horrible, especially for shooting off of the bench.

If you want to shoot at targets regularly off bags or pod then the general savage synthetic stocks are not the most sturdy. As said above get a model with decent stock that that will be relatively well balanced. One with a McMillan, HS or a model BVSS, VLP or the target models.

You buy in haste and repent at leasure. I have been repenting a while now and wish the importance off a good stock had sunk in a couple of years ago. Most other parts are easy to source for a Savage.

I believe the only difference between the FP and the FP-SR is that the SR barrel is threaded on the end for muzzel brakes and what ever else can attache. I just picked up a 10fp from wholesale sports for $599.88, it was a promo price cause they are getting the SR versions in.

That is a 22" barrel gun intended for law enforcement purposes. I would suggest it's a rather poor choice if you really intend to shoot long range. Have a look at a Savage Model 12 F Class. That is much closer to a serious long range target gun.

it would be more for an introductory long range shooter. When the time comes I will probably do a build on it.

As for the 10 FP, so the only realy difference is the FPSR has a threaded barrel? I can't find the 10 FP on savaged site, are they discontinuing it?

As for the stock, I would probably replace the stock further down the road. Who makes a good, simple stock? I like the profile of the standard stock.

I like Savage as they have a real good reputation, with pretty decent prices as well.

Ya they are just "upgrading" that model with a threaded barrel and calling it a fp-sr. I the .223 so having a threaded barrel doesn't make sense to me. I haven't shot it yet but I've heard nothing but good about them and I'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed at all.
