Just got it in and have a problem..
The bolt reassembly is really,really tight..
All the other savage 10s I've had have been smooth..Some even free fall out when you disengaged the release..
This is the first top lever release savage I've had,are the old style release's just really tight when new?

I think you are talking about "inserting" the bolt back into the action and not bolt reassembly?

If so then you have to depress the bolt release and then pull trigger together (safety off).

I'm sure you know this but... the bolt baffles have to be aligned with bolt lugs the correct way. Spin em round if it does not go.
 
Yup to all of the above...I'm saying with the lever all the way pressed down after pulling the trigger the bolt is very very tight going in and out..

Is it dry as a popcorn fart? Did you oil it lightly? Scope rail screws protruding into the action?
 
OK, if the scope mount screws are not protruding into the action as mentioned by Donnie then......

I can say the four or five top bolt release savages I have experience of, the bolt slips out easy. Like you said almost free fall.

"Really Really" tight seems different.
 
This gun is brand new out of the box like this..No mounts are attached..
Looks like the bolt stop still protrudes even when the release lever is pushed down all the way..
I'll put up a couple pics in a bit.
 
I figured you knew all that already.

If depressed fully then in your last pic the release is high. I only tested one Savage, the release is not proud like that.
 
Yup release pressed all the down hard enough to leave inprints of the grooves on my finger..
The pic of the bolt looks worse in person..The cut is deep and it's still tighter then hell to get it in..I'll talk to the dealer on Monday..
 
The action screw can also protrude into the action. Try backing it out a few turns and see what happens.
 
Is it just the picture, or is the bolt head and front baffle miss aligned? The sides of the baffle lugs and bolt head should be flush. The wear groove on the bolt head is a lot worse than on the baffle as well. This looks to be the problem.

Safety in the fire position.
Trigger pulled all the way back and held.
Bolt release depressed while still holding trigger.
Bolt removed from action.

In your picture it looks like the bolt release is not fully down. Could be catching on something. I would remove the stock and try and see if something is snagging.

It's just the picture..Bolt and baffle are lined up..Just a trick of the camera with the dovetail of the baffle looking oblong in that picture.

Yup Pressed all the way down...
I can see the stock inlet underneath without taking the stock off..Nothing is in its way..


I get a much better view then what you see in the pic,but you get the idea..

Here's a pic of the bolt touching the inlet of of stock..A rub with the bolt release would look like this and there's no evidence of it...
 
First of all I would like to say that every rifle should leave the factory in perfect working order however it seems like sometimes this is not a reality.
I own 4 Savage rifles and 3 of them left the factory in perfect condition and 100% fully functional.
The 4th rifle was one of the 10TR's that was attempting to shoot into space.
It took a year at the service center only to come back nearly as bad as it left. It took a replacement rifle to make everything better.

Now back to the rifle in question, I would assume that once the bolt is inserted in the rifle past the bolt stop there is no abnormal resistance when cycling the bolt.
If this is the case I would take the rifle out and test fire it to confirm that the rifle can be zeroed without an abnormal amount of offset in the scope settings.
If everything is good and the rifle is a keeper I would then remove it from the stock to see if there is something that prevents it from going down all the way.
If for some reason it runs out of travel before the bolt stop disappears below the channel I would then take a small file or stone and remove a tiny bit of material from the top of the bolt stop.
 
Thanks for the replys guys..Fortunately our dealers rock!!They have another on hold while they wait for this one.

While I totally agree with fixing up a Norinco or other cheaper gun,there's no why in hell I'm filing a BNIB $1800 dollar rifle..
Savage QC should have never let this gun out without sending it back down the line for repair..
