Savage model 10 ML II opinions??

Hi folks,

Please help me get a better handle on the practicality of the Savage model 10 ML II smokeless muzzle-loader as a hunting front stuffer.

This is in the more general sense, safety issues, reliability, accuracy, etc.

Thanks for any experiences you may be able to offer.

I have one and three of my friends have one as well and this is what we have found.

Pros:
1) No mess of black powder. This is a huge plus. loading is a breeze.
2) Accurate capable of well under 2" groups at 100M
3) Plenty of power 300 gr bullets at over 2000 fps is solid medicine for anything at a reasonable range.
4) Accu trigger
5) Simple to operate.
6) I have had zero misfire

Cons:
1) Plastic stocks are like cheap.
2) Have to remove trigger guard screw to remove bolt and upon reinstalling
be very careful not to over tighten as the bolt will bind.
3) Price is getting up there compared to others that can be bought for much
less.
4) Some can be fussy as to which 209 primers they will use. My bolt will not close with Fiochi primers, is tight with CCI, works perfect with federal. Haven't tried others. two of my friends have had to get new breech plugs from savage to fix this problem as there rifles would not use any primers. However savage sent the parts quickly and at no cost ( ++++ for service)
5) Flimsy ramrod I use a piece of hardwood dowel even when hunting.

If I was only allowed black powder I would use a Knight as I feel they are a better gun. I still have mine and it has served me well over the years. But if you are allowed to use smokeless these are well worth it if you can get use out of it.
 
I bought one last fall.
SS/Black Synthetic.
Shoots like a Hi-Power.I sure don't miss the Smoke( obscuring the reaction of the Deer) or Nightly Cleaning.
Safety,reliability,accuracy,etc. are non-issues with this gun.Follow the Instruction Manual and HAVE FUN !!
In Manitoba,the Hunting regs stipulate that the M/L must be transported home unloaded.That means you must fire it every night and clean it when you get home to avoid potential bore damage from BP or BP Substitutes.Not an issue with a Smokeless Savage !
Oh ya,one more thing,,,no need for a "Fouling shot" every morning with the Savage as it wasn't cleaned the night before...
Go for it,,,you won't regret it !
 
I use IMR 4227 45gr behind a 45 cal 300 gr hornady XTP in a MMP sabot. Serves all my needs nicely. It has taken deer with one shot drops to 200 yds. I don't hunt moose, bear or elk so I can't comment on those critters.
 
i love mine i use accurate 5477 44 grns and hornady 300 grn xtp or sst's and black sabots as prescribed in the manual. sst make one ragged hole at 100m no cleaning at night sight in with a dirty barrel and hunt with same cant be beat. buy one you wont be sorry
