I have a Savage model ten ...that I would like to change barrels on ...however ...it does not have the "wrench indents" on the barrel ...where it meets the receiver ...my Axis has these....were some tens made without the indents on the barrel ( my barrel is a factory barrel...not an aftermarket
 
You have an older 10 with the smooth nut. Can either get the wrench that clamps around the entire nut (which still wouldn't work for me, and this I had to go with option b:) or use a good old fashioned pipe wrench with the action in a vice(between some wood blocks, because I couldn't find a good savage vice block).
Leaves some teeth marks, which sucks because replacement nuts aren't cheap nor are they easy to come by.
