Does any one own a .308 Savage Model 10FP HS Precision Model? I am thinking of getting one and wanted to know what any owners thought of them. I passed up the idea of getting the standard 10FP model, because almost every forum I go to, owners say the stocks feel like "Silly Putty". The first thing they do is get rid of the stock and upgrade. Thanks in advance for any input.

The action and barrel are all the same. Usually very accurate once bedded. The Accutrigger is very nice.

I saw an HS stocked version last weekend and it was a great handling rifle. A good fitting stock for prone and bipod shooting.

I have also used a variety of the factory plastic stocks and they can work very well. You do need to bed and free float that barrel. Otherwise, very functional. The foreend can be made more rigid but I don't bother and it hasn't stopped me from shooting very small groups.

I presently have a 7RM, 308 and 223 all with the factory sporter stock and all shoot 1/2 MOA or better.

From what I understand all the Savage 10FP series have free floated barrels. I can get a 10FP for $510 and a FP10FP HS Precision for $700. Most after market stocks are running around $295 - $325 and higher. So I figure getting the HS already on the rifle is the cheaper way to go. I contacted HS Precision and they told me that they don't have any HS stocks available for the 10FP because Savage is grabbing them all up. So I figure if owners are happy with the HS stock I will go that route. I can't afford the McMillan stock model or an aftermarket McMillan stock at this time. Another reason for getting the HS already on the rifle is, I see a lot of people complaining about all the extra work they have to do to the stock to get it to fit right.

On the topic of bedding stocks, I have a 12BLVSS (laminated, .223) that I think I'm going to have the gunsmith at Ellwood Epps glass bed. My question is how much torque should I give for the action screws after it's bedded, or should I ask the gunsmith about this?

I had one in my hands for a brief visual inspection. Very nice looking. Its not clear how Savage sorts actions (re - stevens - cosmetics or out of spec tolerances...) but I suspect it is their std action / barrel assembly. Savage is hitting the nail on the head as did Tikka several years ago with their T3!

Got mine about 2 months ago, shoots great(with the cheap factory ammo I use). Wouldn't think twice about doing the same. The Stock is like ### for your face. Really comfortable for both your firing hand and your cheek weld.

What brand tripod are you using TDC? It seems that it is the same kind that I see in many rifle photos. I will be also needing a tripod once I get my rifle.

Airborn69, thanks for the pics on that new center feed savage. Where did you see it and how much?

I have been using this new center feed system in a hunting rifle and I love it. The mags and floorplate are robust and overbuilt. Feed very well and will tolerate sharp shouldered cartridges. In my mag, I can go 3.00" OAL if desired.

I believe the 6.5-284 will feed out of this mag. My 6.5 Mystic does with no problem. With blocking the 6BR will too.

Right now its wearing a 6-9" Harris BRS series. The legs are spring loaded to retract not extend. It will end up wearing a Harris 6-9" BRMS series. That's the bipod that permits the swivel for uneven ground and the legs are notched so you can set the height anywhere between 6-9" in 1/2" increments. I've also got an accushot monopod on order to round out the package.
