Hello, i'm new at this, so here it goes!
I bought this rifle last yeat and really enjoy its performance and accuracy! I have the 300 Win. Mag chambering. I hope to extend my rifle out to 1750yds. So far I have it out to 1200yds. Averaging about 10-12" groups. not great but still one moa. I know i will do better as time goes on. Does anyone out there have one of these as well? what kind of success have you had so far? I'm shooting 168gr.Berger VLD's at 3225fps. average.
 
If you are hand loading I would be going with a heavier bullet like the 175 or the 210 with the 300 Win. They will perform way better at distance than the 168. Wind does funny things, JMO.
 
no disrespect guys, but I dont understand how the heavier weights will perform better. I am open for your thoughts and suggestions though. My thoughts are to keep time of flight down as much as possible. less time aflight, less time for the wind to effect it. Also, I am not sure how much range of adjustment My scope will have using a heavier bullet. I am using Leupolds 8.5-25X50mm Mark4, with the TMR reticle. I have had a few great groups with the 168 BergerVLD's @ 1000yds (4",and a few 6-8" as well). I average about 0.65" or so @100yds. What kind of groups are you guys getting with the 175 & 210gr. bullets? My scope was set at 20.25"above my 100yd. zero to hit point of aim at 1000yds.

The BC is higher with the heavier bullets and it takes longer for them to slow down or loose energy than lighter bullets.
I shoot 208 Amaxs out of my 300 win and need only 22.5 MOA to get them on target at 1000 yards. Typically I shoot 1/2 MOA steel gongs at 1000 yards without much trouble hitting them. At 100 yards getting .3 have been done with the 208s out of my rifle and my buddies 300, so they ARE accurate.

hello Alberta Tactical. What kind of velocities are you getting out of the 208's? Have you shot the 210Berger VLD's much? Have you shot at 1760yds much? With what bullets and average velocities? What can I expect to require for scope adjustments with the 210's at typical velocities?
I dont plan to shoot much at that extream range, but I would like to experience hitting my mark a few times. I am an experienced shooter (27years or so), but not at these kinds of ranges. I started this long range stuff just two years ago. I absolutely love it! it has renewed my passion for shooting! I look sooo forward to learning all I can! What kinds of powders give u the best uniformity? I could ask a million questions, but the best thing to do is just let me know how you approach this shooting.
One of my biggest beefs about shooting long range is availability of bullets. I live in Grande Prairie, AB. Just when you find a great load for a rifle, you run out of bullets and the local guys dont carry them any more! If you had only one bullet to use for this type of shooting, what brand/style/weight would you choose?

My 300s send the 208 Amaxs down range at 2975 to 2980 FPS
I found N560 to be the powder of choice and use the 215M primers. Unfortunately Lapua quit making 300Win Mag brass a couple of years back, I was lucky enough to snag 1000 pcs so am set for a while.
I spend as much time as possible shooting at extreme long range, figuring 1000 yards to be medium range only, so yes I have spent a fair bit of time at the 1500 to 2000 yard mark and beyond with various calibers.

I have not spent much time with the 210 Bergers as they are a finicky bullet to get to work, they are a great bullet, I just do not have enough time to rework all my loads to deal with them and given the success I have had with the 208s see no need to change at this time.

Something I do , is when I find the perfect load I then buy as much of the same components from the same lots as possible, a different component lot does make a difference at all ranges but is much more noticeable at extreme long range.

Another question, What do you think about the 190gr. berger VLD? Do you feel there is any advantage to shoot these over the 210? thank you for your time once again! This will shorten my learning curve considerably. Take care and shoot straight

The Bergers are great bullets but seating depth seems to be more critical to get them to shoot to their potential. I found that the Amaxs were just more forgiving as far as seating depth was concerned.
Best bet if you have the time is to try the 190, 208s and 210s and see what your rifle prefers. The 210s have a higher BC than the 190s do so in theory they "should" perform better at long range.

I doubt it will happen again, but i will try the load again sunday out to 1000 or so, if I get the time. I was 0.030" off the rifling. But I think I will try 0.050" off just to drop pressures a little. You say that the 208A-max isnt finicky about seating depth. That would be one thing less to worry about! I will try them, but havent seen them available here yet. What price are they a box? I noticed that the Berger 210VLD's are much more expensive than the168's.

I can't speak for other shops but we always have 208s on hand as I shoot alot of them and hate to run low;) We sell them for $50.00 per box of 100

Typically heavier bullets cost more than light 1s regardless of caliber due to more material being used.
