Savage model 111 for long range ?

Hey guys like the title says I have a savage model 111 older style without the accutrigger , it is chambered in 270 win it was my hunting rifle but I will be upgrading to a new remington or tikka for this fall.

My question is, is this rifle worth building for a long range rifle ? I know 270 isn't used for long range but I could also get a new or used barrel in .308,260,6mm or 6.5

I'd like to upgrade the stock as well but I read on other fourms it is hard to find a stock for this rifle because of the detachable mag which doesn't make much since because most of the savages I see have a detachable mag

Should I just keep the gun spence it was my first rifle and pick up a used remington 700 and build from that base or can I do this with ease and ease of finding parts I'd want to upgrade ?

Ok there are few rifles that are WORTH doing what you are talking about doing, BUT I am not the kind of person to frag someone for an idea or dream they have I love the Savage action and I know a lot of people that will back me on it being one of the top actions out there. The "low end" Savage actions have to be better then a lot of the Mid-range Remington actions.

The real question is; do you feel happy shooting that action and anyone tells you it is hard to find hardware for that system has never used Google.

I Love love love LOVE the .308 caliber, it must be one of the most useful rounds ever made the 6.5x55 is another really good one that I know people that stand by 100% and another one you should look at is the .243 as it is "more flat" then the .308 caliber.
 
I am thinking of getting a Savage in 375 Ruger.with accutrigger and accustock
Shilen make drop in match grade barrels for Savage.
I am a newbie but am enamoured with 6.5x55 and should I embark on the endeavor would have two rifles in one .......sort of

I'm happy with the accuracy of the gun it shoots very well as is , action is actually very smooth i haven't done a lot of target shooting besides some hunting and lining my rifle up , I also have a remington 700 varmint sf in 22.250 that I just put a leupold vx3 sand j picatinny rail and trijicon mounts and a Harris s 11-25" bipod on that is going to be my coyote and target rifle just for practice shooting I will also be getting a b and c medalist m40 style for it

But I want to build a long range gun 1000 yard + and have this savage sitting around I was just most courious on what people's opinions are, I heard getting a aftermarket stock is hard to find because of the detachable mag is this true or not ? Because all the savages I see have the 10 round mags from the bottom for some reason I'm leaning more towards a 700 not sure why I just feel its a better rifle but Again I'm new and have been doing research and want to heard some people's actual opinions on here !

I would say either action is good, me personally would use the savage action, tons of aftermarket for it as with triggers and the barrel nut where a gunsmith isnt needed to change barrels, best bet it what you would like better. Either way find a high twist rate in either caliber you choose to stabilize those long projectiles for 1000 yard accuracy like in a .243 twist of 1-7 or 1-8"
 
Spence I already have the savage that is why I was thinking of using it rather then spending 6-700 on a new remington just to tear apart I seem lots of nice builds on here and on YouTube with the savages thanks for the input leaning towards a 6.5 caliber I think!
 
I realized that after I had posted it, the .260 is a long action is it not ? Also if you have any recommendations for me through them in I'm hear to learn!
 
.260 Remington is a Short Action based on the .308.

It is probably one of the best options in a Short Action, and would probably be my choice, but reloading is the only option.

If you want to use your gun, a 6.5x55 is ballistically very similar and wouldn't be a bad choice either.
 
I recently swapped out my savage 10 barrel for a match shilen. WOW, that barrel can shoot. It is really easy to do as well. After attempting some of my own gunsmithing, there is no way I would ever go to a remington action and pay a couple extra hundred dollars for somebody else to do the work. It is really rewarding as well doing your own build.

Different topic, he stated he has a long action, however can he not use the long action and still reliably feed short action cartridges. With the long action he would never be limited by OAL with long for caliber bullets ie, 208 grain amax in 308 etc.

Did you find someone to buy it from in Canada or import it.?


The 6.5x55 is a long action. I read a bit about long range competition in Europe and found that 6.5 x55 is a very popular choice this. I also read that it is an excellent hunting round, for even moose appearantly.
Lapua publish ballistic specs on their 6.5x55 to 1000 meters, only700 for their .308.

it can and is done all the time. In the case of the 260 and even 308 the long action will allow you to mag feed the longer bullets that could only be single feed in a short action.
 
Thanks for the info I will look into it I'm not not reloading yet and won't be for a while until I learn more so I'd rather go with a caliber I can get ammo from a local shop rather then reloads only so a 6.5 would be my best bet for now I'm thinking !

Send me an email and we can discuss but you likely have one of the best donors from a factory rifle. The amount of stuff for the Savage LA is decent and I can certainly help with the compromises you might have to make.

Life and costs get a whole lot better if single feeding but most anything can be adapted

I would highly recommend getting into reloading, especially if you want any kind of long range accuracy. Factory ammunition doesn't cut it when it comes to consistency. Too many unknown variables.

I realize that your question was really related to the rifle but the ammunition means so much too. I have the 111 also, but in 30-06. With my handloads I'm grouping 8 inches at 1100 yards. The big reason for that big of a spread is that I didn't have enough MOA in my scope rail, and was guessing at how high to aim over the target.
 
I have a Savage 111 in 300 wsm just got it, only about 30 rounds through it, I have it in a glass bedded Boyd's stock and I'm getting some funky groups with it. I shoot two shots at 100yards they are 3.5 inches apart, I shoot two more and the post right on top of the other two giving me two really tight groups side by side lol, really weird. It does this consistently. I'm sure it's capable of much better and I need to fiddle with it a bit, going to start reloading, as off the shelf 300wsm is terribly expensive.
