Can anybody help shed some light on the Savage 16fss in 300wsm? Is this a good gun for all my big game needs? Is it a reliable gun/load? I am not familiar with the 300 wsm...does it compare with a .308/ 30-06? Also, will a box of ammo cost an arm and a leg??

Thanks in advance with the help!!

Normally I would say, "try the Search Function". But it doesn't seem to be working today. So, the 16 fss is a good hunting rifle. Quite accurate by all reports, and the wsm is a good long range .30cal cartridge. The one downside to the savage, for me, is the internal mag. I prefer a floorplate or detach mag. The 16fcss comes with the DM.

First of all...good choice in names!

The .300 WSM will kill game like a champ. I don't think the cartridge is going anywhere and Canadian Tire stocks ammo for it now, so your good to go. The Savage wont let you down man :).

You can get alot of info off this site once you learn key stuff to search for and what not. Theres some trouble makers on here but just keep a good sense of humour and you'll learn alot!

I tried the search function, but I ended up nowhere's near what I was looking for... I appreciate the feedback guys... I agree that the internal mag is not so desirable, especially since it only hold 2 rounds, but I figure that the first shot SHOULD count, and the second one is just an emergency one...if I need more after those ones, I QUIT!!

The reason I am asking about this gun is that I have a Remington semi-auto chambered in 30-06, but I find it quite heavy to carry around, plus it tends to jam every so often, and a friend of mine is willing to trade the mod. 16 fss for my gun and a couple of bucks... I'm a much bigger fan of the bolt action, but am not familiar with the Savage. Is the accu-trigger really that great of a trigger system? Again, not familiar with it...

the 300wsm is a 30-06 on steroids!!!! i have a 300 win mag and my friend has a 06 and theres no comparison in my mind the 300 just has much more grunt!! it will take out anything here in north america and most everything anywhere else in the world!! the biggest problem fro alot of people is the recoil, it tends to thump u a bit lol, but if u can take it go for it good gun!! just my 2 cents!

The 16 fss is a light tupperware stock and sporter barrel so you will feel a heck of a lot of recoil. Not that its all bad, just sayin, if you are not comfortable with a jackass kicking you in the shoulder I would look at something heavier. Good news is that it can only kick you twice.

When you put it that way, I'd trade him, turn and run away!:D

They are amazingly good guns for the money and the .300WSM is basically a ballistic clone of the .300WM and is definitely suitable for anything you'll hunt in North America. The Accutrigger takes a bit of getting used to but nothing wrong with it once you've shot it a few times. As for ammo, you'll pay more for 300 mag ammo of any kind than you will .30-06 but it's not that bad and it is available nearly everywhere these days. Sounds like a good trade to me......

(took a long time composing this - left and came back - after posting saw that some of this is outdated due to new posts in the mean time. Hope some of these musings are still useful though.)

I don't know if your newbie status here relates to being a newbie with guns -"all my big game needs" suggests too that this might be your first centerfire rifle. Assuming that it is, I'd say that it is a lot of gun and you should think hard about the recoil.

Even if you've shot a higher-powered guns before, shooting this a lot will really expose you to the risk of developing a flinch. This is true even if the recoil doesn't hurt you and even if you enjoy the recoil. The fact is that the recoil of a big game rifle is very sudden, and even if you enjoy it your subconscious side doesn't, and so there will be a flinching risk. I started out on just a plain 30-06, and I'm speaking from experience. I always enjoyed shooting the gun, but ended up needing a lot of practice with various guns, both powerful ones and with 22s to set myself right.

I wonder if part of the draw to these high velocity cartridges is due to unrealistic expectations of what ranges game will be shot at. I'm not criticizing you here, since as I wrote above I don't know where you're coming from on this topic, but this scenario keeps coming up. I'm sure that there will be some fields around your area where 200+ yard shots could happen, but maybe go out and pace off some distances to see what realistic shooting distances look like in the woods.

I would suggest that a 300 Savage would suite your needs. It’s also pretty widely available (I’ve seen it at Canadian Tire too), and you’ll have more options for mailorder as a number of loads are listed by different manufacturers. This cartridge will kill any non-dangerous North American game at any range that any new (and most experienced) hunters have any business shooting. Also, I think that Savage might currently be chambering it in the gun you are looking at – it’s available in several, but may have to be ordered.

Also, if you’re gun-nut enough to sign up for this sight, you won’t be happy with just one ‘all-round’ big game gun for long. The 300 Savage will fit in really nicely in a big game battery with a 35 Whelen or a 338 Mag if you go back to wanting that more powerful gun.

Waah, wahh, recoil hurts with synthetic stocks. The only kind of recoil you can't feel is on a rifle with a "heavy" wood stock. Jebus help us.

As he's complaining about the weight of his current gun, a Limbsaver pad might be a better solution to the heavier recoil of a lighter gun. They sure do tame the magnums down.

I have a 116 FSS which is just the long action version. Its in 300 RUM. I love the gun. its accurate but it is a light rifle and has a lot of recoil.

In response to Ruffed Grouse, I'm a newbie to the site, but have dealt quite a bit with guns, some good, some bad. I'm really not so familiar with the site, so I may not be asking the right questions at the right spot, but I'm curious about the 300wsm since this is a new caliber to me. Thanks to all that replied... I seem to have a better understanding of this round now... bottom line, it will do what I want it too, at a not too steep price. I will be considering reloading too, providing that the Savage will not scatter all over the place. I'm not looking for dime size groups, but consistency is always nice, and I don't seem to be getting it with the remington 7400... not a big fan of this gun, even though I consider Remington to have one of the best guns for the price out of the box.
