Im looking for my first long distance paper/gopher gun probably gonna get it in a 204 maybe a 223. Just looking for some advice on the caliber and which gun would be prefered savage 25 or the rem varminter, i kinda like the savage stocks but am also looking for some performance. Hopin to one day work my way out to 700 or so

As a gopher gun I love my 204 Ruger but if you don't reload then the cost of ammo would definitely push me towards the .223. Also if you plan to do some longer range shooting in the future a .223 with a faster twist (1-9 or faster) will enable you to use heavier bullets (ie 75 grain) with a higher BC, all the 204 factory barrels I know of come with a 1-12 twist which limit you to 40 grain bullets.

My rifle is a Savage but a Model 12 not the 25. I think that comparing the Savage Model 25 to a Remington 700 I would personally pick the Remington. However a Savage Model 12 (or any in that family) would be more comparable to the Rem 700 and each has their strong points. The Rem 700 is the traditionally favored action so lots of aftermarket options are available, where as the Savage Model 12 has the barrel swap option. I don't think there is a lot out there for the Model 25.

A friend of mine has a Model 25 in 204 and he really likes it but if you are thinking of going beyond what a factory gun can deliver the Remington will offer more options. Or a Savage Model 10 (or 12, 14, 16, etc all same family) would also be a good choice.

stay the hell away from the model 25. It has a pinned barrel, a bolt/action so small it will not accept a bore guide (resembles a rimfire bolt) and it hs certainly underwhelmed me with its accuracy. IHMO, they are junk.

i preferr to call mine a POS not junk
seeems more fitting
my junk pile is more rusty

kind of expected that, they are trying to offer a lot with a very low price, the prices on the two are very similiar. What about the remington tactical in a 223 is 20 kinda short for. Ive heard good things about this gun in a 308 but i really kinda wanna stay smaller than that. I can get it slightly cheaper than both the sps varmint and the model. These guys give the 25 decent reviews.

Rem 700 in 223-and try to find one with a 9"twist off the shelf. Burn it out learning distance shooting and then rebarrel with a 7 twist. There is loads of aftermarket product to customize and tailor 700s to suit you. 204 will betray you at long range and barrel life is better with 223 so you'll be able to shoot more before you need to rebarrel.

I got a modle 25 and have had no issues at all. Im not sure but i think i got a wendsday build cause since i bought mine it has been awsome to me and can group .6 or less at 200yrds. Pretty decent to me. I have over 600 rds down the pipe of my .204 savage modle 25 and all is good. One thing i will say is i have to clean it alot to keep it straight on(every 50rds or so) but i like the rifle for the price.

A comparison between a model 25 & remington 700 is like comparing apples to oranges.

A Savage 110 or 112 to a 700 Remington is a more viable comparison.

That is a better comparison. I just thought i would voice my thoughts on my 204. My neighbour owns a model 110 in 22-250 and and yes it is a better rifle than my Model 25 but i like it and the price was right for mine.

If on a tight budget, Savage 12FV in 223 (9 twist is just fine). Have it bedded and the barrel channel opened up (unless you get an accustock), get the Accutrigger as light as possible. Load up some quality bullets and enjoy.

If you have a few more rubles in your pocket and would prefer another stock style, then just get the stock that suits. Cheaper in the long run then trying to find an aftermarket stock later (Royal PITA these days).

If match accuracy or competition become of interest, the Savage can be rebarreled easily, inexpensive, without all the fuss needed with a Rem.

Works for me...

Jerry

PS, if you have to compare the M25 and Rem, get the Rem.

No it can't. This rifle uses a pinned barrel and an action with a very small diameter bolt. It's like a Remington 710 with a rimfire bolt.
