I bought a Savage 340 rifle in .30-30 a year or two back. It makes light primer strikes consistently, and maybe fires one cartridge of ten.
A search of the web told me this is not at all uncommon with these rifles, and is usually crud buildup in the bolt (mine is clean inside) or a weak firing pin spring. I drifted out the roll pin and pulled off the bolt sleeve; nice and clean and rust-free. So I ordered a 27-lb Wolff spring to replace the original, which is 22 lbs IIRC. When I went to disassemble the bolt body, there was a piece missing: a key that fits in a keyway in the cocking piece. I continued on to change out the spring, but no dice, the problem persists. I'm uncertain as to what function the missing piece plays, and whether it is (as logic dictates) the likely culprit?

In the diagram linked below, the missing piece is part number 6. I will see if there is a part available somewhere, but can someone explain what the key does, and whether its absence could cause light primer strikes? I like this little rifle otherwise, and I'd like to make it dependable so I can give it to my nephew.

Thanks for any help!

So, I just ordered the part from Numrich, along with a bunch of screws and a new bullseye for my beloved Marlin 336A that someone used ill-fitting screwdrivers on over the years.

If it fixes the problem I'll resurrect the thread.

The firing pin screws into the cocking piece. The firing pin can be screwed in and out to set firing pin protrusion. The little half moon piece with the square notch in it locks the firing pin in place and keeps it from turning, once firing pin protrusion has been set.
