Savage Model 340C 30-30

I have got my eye on a Savage Model 340C 30-30. I am looking for some opinions on this gun from guys that have used them. Is it a good gun? I will be using it for deer, but could I use it for hunting other big game? Being a bolt-action with a clip, could I use the new leverolution ammo and expand the capabilities of this gun? I think a 30-30 bolt-action would be a neat gun to have. This would be my first "big game" rifle that I would be buying.
 
I like them, there have been a few in the family. My aunt shot a black bear through her screen door with one a few years back, so they'll do the job. If you scope it, you have to use a side mount, and be aware that it's an old gun, and if you break something, parts will take a little searching. - dan
 
I've handled, but never owned one, though the idea of a 30-30 in bolt action has some appeal. However, for a first big game rifle purchase I'd likely look for something else - .308, 30'06, 7mm, .300 Win, .270W...the list goes on...Unless of of course you're being offered the 340 30-30 at a steal of a deal.
 
all depends on what your paying for it, your better off buying a stevens 200 or a mossberg ATR, I had a few Savage 340's and they are a great little rifle, very lite perfect for the bush
 
My wife and I have 1 Savage and a Stevens 325, that is basicly the same rifle. If you reload for them, they can be very vesitile, using bullets from 110g to 170g bullets, and yes they will shoot the new ammo from Hornady. I think they are a an execellent short range Deer rifle, and will take bigger game at short ranges. If you want to shoot past 200 yards, you should do as 6.5x55 said, and look at a Stevens 200 in .270 or .30-06.

If it's in nice shape & you can get a good deal on it then you're good to go. The .30-30 is sweet in a bolt gun. I previously had a Rem 788 bolt in .30-30 [wish I kept it].

That said, I think a Stevens 200 in .308 would be a better bang for the buck.
 
My dad has a 340 Savage in 30-30 that he uses for deer. I have one in 222 Rem that I use for varmints. Neither of us have had any problems with them. In 30-30 you should be looking at $200 max without a scope, if it has a scope add whatever the scope is worth to the price.
 
Thanks for your input everyone. I have looked at the Stevens 200, but they do not come with open sights. I am not interested in a scoped rifle as I will be hunting thick bush. This rifle at just under $200 is ready to go hunting and at that price suits my wallet.
 
I bought my wife the Stevens 325 which is the same rifle basically. I needed to put in a new firing spring (available from Brownells) and while I was at it I replaced the front bead with a sourdough.

The gun will feed empties from the magazine and is very accurate. 125 Sierras at 2400ft/sec shoot near MOA and really do a number on caribou.
130 Speer Flat Noses at 2400 penetrate better and are very reliable and the 170 FN's from Hornady or my diminishing stock of CIL KKSP's penetrate wet newsprint as well as 275 grain bullets in my 358 Norma.

What's not to like?
 
Have had a Savage 340 30/30 ,3x9 Scope for past 8 years..........useing spitzers it will do the inch at 100 yds....125 nosler bal. tips/2600 fps........150 speers 2490 fps, both useing h335 as fuel..........

Even a scope on 3X is a better aiming point than iron sites in the thick stuff if all you get is a partial view of the game........

Sounds like you'll be hunting deer a relatively close ranges, and if that 340 is ready to go at under $200, it'll likely be difficult to pass up.
 
I found the actions very rough, the idea of being able to use PSP bullets didn't pan out as most 150s had to be seated way to deep in the case to cycle thru the clip. Acuracy was good enough for hunting but personally I think there's way better choices for very little more money.
 
Seems there are more "Yays" than "Nays"! If you like it and it suits your budget, go for it. I've had 3 over the years and am in the process of rebarrelling another for 30-30. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yup!
 
Senior brought up a good point about 150g psp bullets being too long for this rifle. I found the Winchester 150g psp Power point workes real good for this rifle, and a lot of 125g psp bullets can be loaded up to 2600-2700 fps with no problem at all, and no preasure.
 
I bought the gun and can't wait to take it deer hunting in November. I'll post pictures soon. Thanks for your opinions. Any advice on ammo? 150 gr. or 170 gr.? Should I stick with round nose bullets or could I use psp bullets? Has anyone used Fusion ammo? Could I use it in this gun?
 
I wasn't aware that Federal made 30-30 Fusion. If they do, it would be within SAAMI specs so should be OK in this rifle. If in doubt, have it gone over by a reputable gunsmith.
