Can Anyone direct me to a source of info on this gun ? The usual dates of mfg, value, ect ect , but I'm mostly interested in it's rear sight..as in did it have one ?
The one I just picked up came with a dovetail slot with a piece of metal in it . It looks finished to me and not like it's been cut off or anything.

Thx

N

Well firstly I don't think they were issed with a serial number!!! Mine dosen't have one either. And without one it's going to be very hard to establish which year your particular rifle was made.

Cobra I may have a rear sight as I took mine off I'll check my stash and see.

I have several .22's without serial numbers. Give them the info on the model number, make, etc. and they give you a sticker with numbers on to put on the gun.

Would I have to take it to the verifier?

Here's a couple pictures.

Nice pictures!

Yes you would if it's never been registered. (Let's hope they kill the registry soon! ;))

Code:

" Individuals are to use the redesigned form CAFC 998 to register any firearms that have never been registered."

Ok thanks! What would happen if I was stopped by the police on the way? Would they just take the gun, no charges? Sure would be nice if this registry would get scrapped already.

LOL. I'm sure that if you phoned the verifier first that you were coming over with the gun he'd vouch for you, if in the worst case scenario the police stopped you and asked why you had an unregistered gun. ;)

Thx Guys, apparently they were made between 1933 and 1965 so it's most likely there is no serial numbers...mine doesn't have one. And I have a shorter mag than in your pic.....and I'll gladly take a rear sight off your hands if you have one...Thx again

A verifier will tell you what you have..."Savage Model 4" and give you a number from the FRT (2155-4) and his personal verifier number and in theory the CFC will issue you a FIN (Firearms Identification Number) in place of a serial number.....and then a Registration Certificate number and (again) in theory you will then be a law abiding citizen of a supposedly free and demo.....but I do tend to rant....

If you can afford to wait you won't need to do any of that. I'm still waiting for my serial number sticker, which I can't imagine will stay stuck after a few oiling's and a season of grouse hunting. I registered mine back when the deadline was looming so I'm not worried about any stupid stickers anymore.

Cobra I can't find the bits anymore, sorry!! The stock clip is 5 rounds and they sell a 10 round one which I also have. I scoped mine with a weaver side mount setup. Works pretty good.

No worries... I'll find a sight somewhere....but I did find an entry in an old Gun Traders guide that says these are "takedown" ??? Doesn't look like it to me but ....if anyone knows for sure or even better how to, let me know....

How do you guys find these rifles for accuracy? By the way my mag only holds 5 rounds too, I didn't have it all the way in. :D

I can't really tell if it's a take down, the barrel might unscrew. After all the years though you gonna need something to really grip it.

I found info on what 10 round mag fit this model 4. I found them 4 $18 in the USa wonder if they can be shipped to Canada?

Savage, Stevens, Springfield .22LR, 10 round, fits the following guns: 1, 2, 4, 4C, 4D, 4E, 7, 7A, 7H, 19 (not NRA 19), 23AA (not NRA 23A), 26C, 33, 34, 35, 56, 056, 56C, 056C, 57, 057, 65, 84, 084, 084S, 84C, 84CNS, 84CD, 84D, 84E, 85, 085, 85A, 85E, 85K, 85KE, 85H, 416, 420, 840S, 850, 850H
