I've read the reviews on the Savage Model 42 (new version of the 24) and I'd like to get out and shoot someone's at a range if possible in southern Ontario before making the final decision on one. This would be a field gun lugged through the bush for small game.

If you've got one - how do you like the break open single shot .22LR over a .410 SG?
PM to set up time/location - I'd appreciate the opportunity to check it out rather than just fondle it over the counter.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I figured hunting would get the biggest audience.

Personally I'd be waiting for a 22LR over 20ga but I'd only want one for putting small game in the pot and over the years I've never had a problem with the 22LR on grouse and rabbits.

But I digress. Someone help this fellow out with a real shooting test.

I'll have to mention that to the spirits of all the dead rabbits and partridge that have fallen to the .22's and .410's at my hunt camp! Good thing they didn't know this wisdom! Thanks!
Kudos to your rabbit/upland bird killing prowess my friend!
One factor I like about hunting with the 20 is the option of the bigger slug, just in case I bump into a WT deer or a wolf at close range here in NE Alberta.
This is a legal practice here with a big game tag in your pocket during an open season alongside the upland bird licence.

Cheers........

Some wisdom would be reading comprehension.

I never said .410 and 22LR could not kill. I said 20g is superior to either of them . Which it is. In particular the 410.

How is a properly choked 20g not superior to a 410? A 22lr has a range advatage, I do give you that. But inside 40m I take the 20g any day.

I own all three. Im very well aware of their limitations.

They have the same range, so let me see, weight, size, muzzle blast, more compact ammo... the liist is quite long. The 20ga is an incredible round, own a few myself, hunted ducks for years with one. But for SMALL game unless you are talking about the price of factory shells, the 410 is still king.

And before the argument starts.... #6 shot has the same energy no matter what guage it was fired from as long as the velocity is the same.

Unless it is for small game.....

Lol.... The poor fellow do go on about reading comprehension when The OP specifically asked about the darn thing for small game.... Not small game and the ability to down a deer. Something that a .22 over .410 is just about perfect for..... is small game! Not that I'll argue the versatility of a 20 gauge, but if bunnys and partridge where my quarry, I'd not be looking for a .223 or a 30-30!

this comment makes me shake my head in shame.. 410 still the king, haven't had a laugh like that in a while

Are these guns even out yet?

I called LeBarons and the guy at the firearms counter says they haven't received a single one yet from their Savage supplier. Since the Model 42 is in the catalogue I assumed I could get my hands on one.
They don't seem to be available in the GTA yet. Didn't realize it was so early in the distribution of this firearm.

Are firearm models like new cars where the general advice is don't buy the first year model until they can work out the kinks?

My local gunshop ordered 20 of them and hasn't recieved one yet from Savage.

I ordered a Savage 14 in 250 Savage in April and it still isn't in yet either and it's deer season.

Whats the problem with Savage Arms?
