I was at the Macleod Trail Canadian Tire this week to pick up some ammo for a friend and I noticed that they had a Savage Model 42 in the display case. Long story short I bought it. They had both the 22lr and the 22mag over .410 versions. I bought the 22lr, I was looking for a Ptarmigan/Grouse gun for hunting near Yellowknife. The other day I was having trouble deciding which to carry a 22lr or a .410, this makes that decision mote in future.

Photos of this gun make it look awful but in the hand if feels pretty good, seems very light and handy. The stock is hollow and the butt plate is removable with out tools if you have a sling on it to twist the rear sling stud out with. I may stuff some simple survival kit into the stock at a later point.

I've made a quick range trip with it, accuracy with stock sights seems good enough for small game. Both barrels seem to shoot to the same POI but I'll have to put a little more effort into properly test shooting it to be sure.

The only thing that I don't like about it is the extractor system, seems like it might be difficult to extract spent cases with gloves/mitts on in the cold but so would loading them so I guess I'll have to figure this part out as I go.

So far I I think that this will be a good little bush small game gun though I do think that at just shy of $500 it is too expensive for what it is but then again there is not much choice out there for combo guns these days.

I'll post a range review when I get a chance to shoot it some more.

I'm still waiting holding my fingers crossed they will come out with a 20ga version, they look like a handy little gun.

The only issue I have with mine is that the .22lr shoots low. That seems to be a common problem. It is however very accurate. Otherwise I am pretty happy! Paid $450 plus taxes at south red deer CT. I am going to pick up one in .22 wmr. I actually came to this subforum to ask if any had been spotted. Thanks for the heads up!
