I just bought my girlfriend her first rifle for her birthday (savage model 64). Does anyone have any comments (good or bad) on this particular gun? I realize that this probably would have been a better question to ask before the purchase but the price was right and we are keeping it (at least for now).

I have an old Cooey model 64 (nearly identical to the Savage 64) and I am very happy with it. I find it to be quite reliable and accurate. I only payed 75 bucks for mine and I am very glad I bought it.

When cleaning be careful at the point where you pull the barrel out of the receiver - ejector sits between the two and can be damaged. Can download the manual for these from the Savage website.

Not as accurate as a CZ or T/C but 1/4 the price, good to learn shooting/maintenance with. I enjoy mine too.

like Cote, I had an old "64" but I think that mine was a Lakefield, decent gun and my nephew shoots it now. Still kills gophers and jack rabbits.

savage

i just bought my 2nd one...i love them ...heres a little history...cooey had the plat in ONT. then wincester had it ...then mossberg took it over and made lakefields...and now savage owns it...they all have made a version of the 64...the latest being savage with a safety added...as it was said...keep them clean and they'll be happy
thanks

I have 6 Cooey 64s including a plastic mag issue. These were the original 64 model then converted to white metal magwell and mag model 64A , then Lakefield 64B and many more models for customer sales like Sears 8C (64C). Great little guns and quite accurate for varmints.

but keeping the firing mechanism (bolt) and action clean is very important.

Picked up a Lakefield 64b with a bit of a sloppy trigger. I picked up a trigger assembly from a new Savage and dropped it in, no issues...

Keep it clean and it will function pretty flawlessly.

It's the reason I'm thinking about selling my 17HMR.
