Well my buddy could not say enough about the .17 HMR performance over .22 RF, so I decided to pull the trigger on another Savage bolt action as I love the Accutriggers.

So retiring my Anschutz after 40 years of use.

This one has a heavy fluted 16.5" threaded barrel.

Will add a bipod and glass I have just, need a cheek riser for the stock comb.

Anyone know what 17 HMR ammo is the most accurate in these Savages?

Thanks
Randy

Congrats on the new rifle! I have the 93r17tr absolutely love it, I did have to polish the bolt it felt a little sticky to me. There are only a handful of ammo for the .17hmr, the ones I have tried;

Hornady vmax, federal vshok, federal copper hp, cci a17 (higher velocity) and cci tnt hp.

For my rifle the federal vshok shoot slightly better groups than the Hornady vmax. The federal hp shoot about the same as the vmax. The cci tnt hp arnt too bad but I wouldn’t buy them again and the cci a17 was by far the worst shot groups I’ve ever shot, I don’t know if it’s because they shoot 2650fps instead of 2550 but they where horrible.

I have that exact gun, Hornady 17grn V-max is what I shoot, I like the gun so much I have two in .22LR (one is the wife’s) and in .22WMR also, I put them all mine into the MDT LSS chassis, wife’s is in a Boyd’s stock.

FYI only the .22LR has a fluted barrel, the other two are plain.

I had two I did trigger jobs on (spring pressure only) to lighten them up a tiny bit, and two were fine at around 2.5lbs on the lowest setting, I don’t mind the accutrigger blade so they feel fine to me.

When I ran the plastic stock I debated these risers, but ended up making temperary ones as I was going to Boyd’s stocks, but after trying the MDT chassis there was no looking back.

I am with you on the MDT chassis. I got mine about a month ago for my mkii and it’s been one of my favourite rifles to shoot, been thinking about throwing my TR into one as well but I really do like the Boyd’s tacicool stock, it’s almost identical to the stock I have on my 700.

The 17 hmr is a good round. I got a savage and it did very well.

As for ammo, I tried 4 or 5 different types to find what shot best. Just like 22LR the rifle will tell you. Mind just so happen to like the CCI 20 grain hallow points. Worked out very well because I was going to use it as a hunting rig.

17 is good but also has downfalls. The barrel fouls easily and must be kept clean. Match ammo does not exist but will still out shoot most 22's.

A good look up for barrel length, in this link. From 10-22 inches.

10" barrel produced a velocity average of only 241 fps slower than the 22" length, and only 262 fps less than the best average of the 19" length.

SO really no "optimal" barrel length. So pick what ever you find the most comfortable for your type of shooting!

Pic of my savage rifle and pic of groups at 100 yards.
