I want an HMR again, but DO find some of the accuracy claims on web forums to be pretty outlandish. I'm no pro, probably have all kinds of imperfect technique where bench shooting is concerned...don't own any target guns, etc. Where HMRs are concerned, I used to be able to get 8-9/10 shots in a 1" ring off a rest or lying prone off a bipod at 100 yards. Anything outside of 1-1/2" was unusual, but not unheard of. I'm guessing, based on what I've seen with my own eyes, that this MIGHT be how an average shooter does with unmodified rimfires and factory rimfire ammo. On average, my best groups were with Savage guns..but the best group I EVER shot was with a CZ452 and 20gr. Hornady. An honest 1/2", 5-shot group at 100 meters/110 yards. Happened once, and only once.
I'm playing around with ammo options for my .22WMR right now, I have (or have on the way) every kind of .22WMR ammo I can get my grubby hands on. Why? Well, I've yet to get 5 shots in the 1" ring at 110 yards with anything I've tried so far, which is 5 different varieties. Even sprung for some Remington 33gr. V-Max style ones~$16.50 at Bass Pro. Ridiculous! lol Speaks to my enthusiasm...don't judge me.
When I was last at the range attempting this, it was all I could do to keep what I had in a 2" ring at 110 yards. Granted, there were assault rifles and 8.5" grizzly shotguns sounding-off all around me...but I can't blame that for the accuracy I wasn't getting. If I can consistently get 1"-1-1/4" groups at that distance with a 22 mag, I'll be content.
I mean...cloverleaf, one-ragged-hole groups.
