I picked up an Enfield Savage a couple of weeks back and have found that the bolt head will sometimes pop out of the slot in the reciever. The slot is worn a bit on each side. Is there any way to repair the slot?

Thanks

Mine did that a few times, it seemed to happen when I was babying the action though., If you ram the bolt home it should engage properly.

I've tried slow and fast, well as fast as I can, and it still pops out every so often. I think it is because the bolt starts cocking there and causes a bit of torque?

IS the bolt head screwed too far in or ot in far enough?

Other than that it's probably just as the other poster said, old and worn.

I think the bolt head is screwed in right. I think it is just a matter of wear. SKScanuck do you know how much that repair cost?

Could be that the slot is too LONG for your bolt-head. Your bolt-head could be on the short end of specs, your slot on the long end of specs.

Before you spend a lot of bucks, try a few other bolt-heads in the thing or, better yet, mike a batch of them, compare to what you have, and go from there.

Some of the bolt heads for mk1 rifles did not feature the same degree of chamfer in the area where the head rides in the rail at the slot. They can end up damaging the slot.

As smellie pointed out, try some different (but the same number size) boltheads and see if your problem isn't cured.

Thanks for all the ideas. From what I've been reading it looks like this damage is common when the bolt head isn't perfect for the slot. I found one smith who does the repair for $50 in the states. However I did run accross an old post on the net where someone suggested wrapping the bolt head threads with a few wraps of teflon tape to give it just a bit of stiffness so it doesnt come out of the slot that easily. It seems to be working so far. Cheap and easy just the way I like em!:)

I have one that has the same problem, the rail on the reciever is worn and chipped, tefflon will work.

to really fix it you need to build up the chipped area then machine away the excess weld, not a cheap job.
