I want to pick up a nice, accurate .223 and was wondering how the Remington 700 sps compares to the savage models with the accu trigger.
Pretty similar in price, but the remington may need some trigger work done, if I'm not mistaken?
Also, my friend may sell me his ruger m77 in 22-250, I think that's what it is,
but not sure if he will let it go.
And a 4th option is the stevens 200, very cheap but how does it group at 100yards?

I am looking for out of the box accuracy here, I'm no gunsmith, but I want a real tack driver thats relativly cheap to shoot.

Thanks guys.

You are going to start the usual revolution between Savage and Remi onwers

as far as rifles, both Sav and Remi shoot nice, depending on the shooter :D, I got Sav with accutrigger which is a great addition, so the accuracy could be better assuming we talking 10FP model with heavier barrel

also on a sidenote I told my friend to get a Stevens 200, as that rifle is a great cheap tack driver, will group MOA all day with quality ammo and good input

I have a Savage 12fvss...26" barrel and could not be happier with any gun up to 1000 yards as that is the range length. Groups great at any distance ..with over the counter ammo. 62 gr. May do better with 75 gr. but have trouble getting that from USA.

I have a Savage 12Fvss .223 that has a cheap scope and can get sub MOA with bulk cheap ammo. If you can afford the $650 price its a great start for you. A good optic would be worth its weight in gold so save some pennies for that;)

I am leaning toward savage with that accutrigger, but it was remington that got me started on wanting a precision rifle, as the sniper systems in the states are based on it. (at least the action.)
But I am really a sucker for low priced quality, and the stevens seems to fit the bill for that.

i don't know but you can't beat a savage in my mind steavens are good guns for the price are better then some lower end gun out there ie the remington 710 which even the die hard remington owners despised

PM,
You might want to provide a little more information around the ultimate goal/use of the rifle.
Long range precision shooting, you might be better of with the fast twist barrel of the savage.
Varmint shooting - the Remmy 1/12 could be the answer.
BTW - not sure but the US military snipers were using Remington 700 in .308 - different kettle of fish.....

I was hoping mostly to punch paper with cheap centerfire, apparently theres lots of surplus .223 floating around up here, lots of hunters up here use it, it can take down almost anything but whales, polar bears and muskox.
It was the Remington action I heard good things about, but I like the sound of that accutrigger.

A few pages back in this forum will be a post on setting up my Stevens 200 in 223. You might find it helpful.

For a factory heavy barrel, the Savage 12FV is the choice - 9twist gives you more ammo/shooting options, accutrigger is easy to adjust and will go to 1 - 1.5lbs which the new Rems can't, a strong record of 1/2 MOA rifles once bedded with good ammo, lots of options for the future.

I went the Stevens route because I want a lighter trigger then the accutrigger (aftermarket add on), would be putting on an aftermarket barrel (pac nor), and restocking. Not much of the orig rifle left in its heavy barrel form.

The orig rifle with the lighter sporter barrel makes a great walkabout varminter - shoots 3/8MOA out to 200yds and MOA'ish way out there using 75gr Amax. I have 'two' rifles using the same action.

Rems require a lot more work to tweak and that raises final costs.

Buy on price. Remington triggers are adjustable. So is the Savage 'Accutrigger'. The Stevens trigger is not completely adjustable. Although it supposedly comes out of the factory at 4 pounds. That's a decent trigger pull.

Go with Remington.
I watched a fellow shoot 60 bulls in a row at 300 yards, this morning at Connaught in a Seirra Shoot he was using a new outbox Rem 700 Police in .223

Another vote for Savage...

I'm thrilled with my 12FV... Winchester USA 55gr fmj is a cheap round that shoots really well out of it...

It also really likes 69, 75, and 77 gr match ammo... but that's more expensive.

Both are great makes/models, I was in the same spot a few years back, went with a Savage 10fp. I like the fact that I can work on my own rifle vs having a smith do it, barrel changes are a snap and I really like the accu-trigger. Its a toss up which ever way you want to go, Rem or Savage. :)

save some money buy the savage the trigger is wonderfull short crisp imho can't be beat for the cost

ps so shouldn't your thing say polar mans body gaurd?
