savage or remington?

It depends... I'm not preferential to either one... I've used a variety of savages in .223 and one in .22-250 for either shooting varmints or sniper matches (thanks Rob, Jay, and Brad) and a couple of Rem 700s for the same (the freshest memory is Dennis' '250) and they were all shooters, and they felt good in the hands. But what can I say.... the XR100 is still a better shooting and just plain ###IER rifle. :p :D

Crappy ugly Savages or those god awful Tikkas with the hollow plastic butt stocks that sound like a kids water gun when you tap it!!! Couldn't they have at least filled it with foam or something so at least it would float if you dropped it in the lake? I would imagine it would crack in very cold weather. It reminds me of a Chev. Avalanche...cheap plastic junk!

My "god awful" Tikka is basically a one-hole gun at 100 and shoots .5MOA at 300. Gives my comletely custom 6BR's (at 4-5 X the cost) pause for thought. My guns are neither furniture nor trucks, they're guns. I by them for how they fit, shoot, and their future potential - not for how they float, drive, or compare esthetically to the next guy's gun on the line.

A poor musician can blame his instrument only so much.

Some shooters here do extremely well with their crappy ugly, and god awful guns. The important thing is they enjoy the sport and they get out and shoot.

Just pick one. No matter what you choose, there'll be lots of fanboi's telling you that you just bought the greatest rifle under the sun, and everything else is garbage

Yeah your right Prosper, I think im gonna get the remington now and and a savage later on so I will have both :p ! im only 18, so I might as well spend money on what I want now, because later on in life I may not beable to because i know for a fact i will have way more expenses than i do right now lol. Either way im sure I'll have the gun for the rest of my life

That's what I did - bought both. Tried them both out, and ended up liking the Savage better (and shooting better groups with it), so I sold the Remington.

Have been meaning on trying a Tikka next, but they're so fugly it's hard to bring myself to do it. Speaking of fugly, I've 'discovered' the Stevens 200 series recently. They're incredibly ugly with nasty cheap-feeling stocks, but they shoot amazingly well. With a little TLC to the trigger, a few sheets of sandpaper to the stock and a coat of paint, these things are great! Never expected 1/2" groups form a $300 gun.

I have several Stevens 200 rifles, and know guys who have at least four more. All shoot under an inch and at least four of them shoot better than half inch.

How can a guy go wrong? :)

rem Or Savage

Hello Dime
Just my thoughts to you on your choice for a new gun.
For me I would go with Remington and i would buy it in .223 or 7mm/08 or .308 they all can shoot very good, the 7mm is better for me than the .243
There are one of each at www.ellwoodepps.com $619
and Remington just blows away everone else for good priced up grades to buy. and if you don't like the Rem which is remote, you can always sell the action for $400 used never get close to that for others.
Stocks they must be bedded if you want them to shoot "any stock"

I have shot benchrest and the gun of most is Remington for the price, now there are better actions "customs" that are better but now we are into big bucks.

i want a 243 because where i live i can only shoot calibers 275 and smaller for small game, sothern ontario for ya! meh i like the fact that i can use it for a deer rifle in the fields upto about 300 yards or so and for coyotes aswell. and i ordered it today! getting a bushenll 3200 10X40 for it too, with leupold std mounts and rings

^ ah that sux. I'd just get a 270WSM to 'stick it to the man,' as it's much MUCH more powerful than the 'scary' 'bigger' calibers, like the 30-30, 308, 44 Mag, etc

Yeah lol, varmint and target mainly and posibly deer if I wana hunt some been feilds or something then I dont have to move much with it. As long as I can get a good trigger job done on it I have heard that remington 700 rifles have very heavy triggers from the factory. Is 794.99 NIB a decent price for these rifles?

Wholesale Sports lists them for $769.95 Dime. As for triggers on the 700's they are fully adjustable and easy to adjust as well. I have two 700's and they both break like glass:). Lot's of instructions on the net for adjusting them. Takes about 10 minutes, and you'll also have to borrow the wifes nail polish to seal the adjustment screws when your finished:D

lol thanks guys, no ball and chain yet....

yeah i dont hunt moose it just seem worth it for me, its too expensive. ya my rifle should be here next week sometime! i cant wait to get out and shoot it

Hey Dime,
Another possibility is the Winchester Model70 coyote. Or the StealthII.
I have a coyote in 243WSSM. It shoots very well and is the nicest looking rifle I've seen.
I'm not a big Savage fan, just do to the fit and finish I've seen. I understand that they shoot very well, but then again I've heard the same thing about the .22 marlins and I can't stand them. It's a personal thing. Go to a gunshop and look them over before you buy. I like the Remington's and the Winchester Model 70s.

Here is my Savage with:

Savage 10FP .308
Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X40 tactical
Bell & Carlson "Druamaxx" stock with Freedom Cammo finish
TPS base
TPS rings
Harris BR bipod
Blackhawk Cheek piece

Thats like asking Chev or Ford.
Diesel or gas

Everyone has an opinion, 1 isnt better, get whats best for you.

Well dime, what did you order?

My opinion is that if you are young and want to get a gun without having to spend more coin later get the Savage. If you dont mind bringing it to the gunsmith (if theres even one close around, as they are hard to come by. If they are swamped it will take awhile to get it back. Hassle) buy a remington.

I have yet to see a Savage/Stevens that did not shoot like gangbusters.

It's hard to beat the Savage accuracy reputation out of the box. If you want one ready out of the box with a self adjusting trigger get the Savage. If you dont mind how a rifle looks then grab the Savage. Now, if you are like others on here who are shallow:p , and need to have the most shiny supermodel rifles your bank acount will allow, get the remington.

As was stated earlier, the Savage can be sanded down and painted by Remington fans

Also, I am reccomend the 308 if you do not handload. If you do get into handloading I am gonna reccomend the 243, 22-250, still the 308, or the 7-08.

You could also buy a used Remington/Savage and have enough coin left over to buy ammo.
