I have started saving money for bolt action rifle. So far have these 2 in mind. Either Tikka or Savage with HS or McMillan stock.Any opinions on which one is preferable?

Well... this is about how well a Savage will shoot.
Five shots .386 of an inch at 100yrds.
75gr. HPBT over 24gr. of 748

Save the mon-ay you'd spend on a tikka and but some good boolits:)

I have had both the Tikka Varmint and the Savage 10FP (w/o MacMillan or HS stock). If you want a lighter weight rig, go with the Tikka, if weight isn't an issue you can't beat the MacMillan stock at that price. I wouldn't spend the extra money on the Tikka tac, use that for optics or accessories.

Just depends if you want to pack it around or not. The tikka is a much slicker action though.

like i have said before i love the savage accutrigger. i made about 1/2" group in at 100 yards with 30-06 using fedral 150 gr. my first time shooting a scoped large caliber gun and im proud of what it did. probly was a fluke knowing my shooting lol

In the same boat...

I'm in the same situation right now only I have reached the point where I've saved enough cash and I'm now trying to do the final gut check.

I'm seriously leaning towards the Savage .223, either the 12VSS with the Choate stock or the 12 BTVS with the laminate stock.

The Tikka is great but is it worth twice the price? And is twice the price going to get you any better than a half inch group?

That's why I'm leaning towards the Savage. The cash you save with the Savage can go towards better glass, better case, better... whatever.

I don't think one will outshoot the other, they are both fine shooters, the tikkas action is much nicer to use though... but fonctionality will be the same

I have had both

The are both very accurate rifles with adjustable triggers.

There are 2 main differences I see between them.

1) The savage is quite heavy compared to the Tikka.

2) The Tikka costs a fair bit more.

There are some minor differences, like the finish on the Tikka being nicer IMHO.

If the cost isnt an issue, I would say to go with whatever feels the most comfortable.

I've had a coup-le of different Tik Tacs. They are great guns with silky smoothe actions. I love them. Bear in mind that they are almost impossible to find after-market stocks for because of their backwards construction; the recoil lug is molded into the plastic in the stock and fits in a groove on the action. (Not an integral part of the action/barrel metal)

They are absolutely fine the way they are, but if you want to change them, it will frustrate you.

I don't think we can tell you what rifle to buy . only thing we can tell you is, if you are saving money for a new rig GOOD but do not stop when you have enough money to buy it keep on saving until you get enough for some GREAT glass very important. Now in the mean time go to the range / gun shop / buddies gun room and try out both of these rifles. Of course shoot them if you can but if not get a good feel for them.Work the action dry fire them . After that check every one that you can find out, until you decide which one you are going to get.
Do us a favor and let us know which one you do get and why you made that choice. I don't know if you can tell but I just went through all of this Hahaha. I got the savage model 12 LRPV in 22-250.
A Leupold VXIII 6.5X20X40 and I installed target turrets just to let ya know.
It has the best stock. (HS)

Thanks for advices,
I like the shapes of HS or McMillan stock on Savages.
I have noticed that McMillan is more expensive. Is it because it is made from different material? Is it worth price difference?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm dying to know what those LRPV's shoot like in real life... How is it performing for you?

I was in the same situation as you; Tikka or Savage. I picked the Savage 10FP in .308. It is a heavy rifle with an awesome trigger and the money I saved went into buying scores of bullets. The Tikka has a way smoother action and removeable mags. My only regret was I should have forked out the cash at the time to get the Mcmillan stock. I can live with the rough action because the thing puts a bullet where I want it everytime.

Wait until you find a used Tikka Master Sporter in .308 aka Poor mans TRG.

I had the same dilemna as you Savage vs TikTac until I found the Master Sporter.

Basically the same as the TikTac but with a solid walnut stock which I prefer anyways.

I can honstly say My preferance is the Tikka Tac. I have owned both and well several 10FP & 112FVS's and a TIkka Tac and several Tikka Varminters.

All around performance for me was the Tikkas.
The savavges shot well I fit better into a Tikka.
Each is to there own but the smothness of the tikka and all around shootability i give the tikka the edge up!

Ian,
I have never heard of Howa before, but since you have mentioned it I have read some reviews. The opinions seem to be mixed. Where do they stand compared to Savage or Tikka or Remington? Who carries them in Canada?

Tikka Master Sporter in .308 - my personal favourite.

There's always a lot of talk about the lack of aftermarket parts for the Tikkas as compared to Savages or Remys. The others need aftermarket parts - Tikkas don't. :D

Buy the Savage.

Anyone asking this question is looking for the cheaper gun and wanting their thriftiness validated.

Just buy the Savage, it will shoot better than you probably can and you'll be happiest with your ivestment there.

Tikka is nice and everything, but from what I hear via performance, its no better then the savage, and the savage saves you money towards buying better scopes and accesories.
