Hello Everyone,
i'm buying a new rifle soon and i would like to get some opinions on a savage and a tikka. I will be using this gun for hunting deer & moose.
My choices are tikka t3 syn/ss or savage 16fcss. syn/ss

whata ya think.

Thanx, Jamie

I own both and without a doubt the T3 is is a much better rifle.

The Accutrigger is a gimick. It is no lighter than the triggers on my 3 T3's and no crisper. The whole safety feature should not be needed on it and if it is, then it's inferior. Just one more moving part to screw up.

I have a Model 10 Sierra and it is not more accurate than any of my T3's. It still is accurate but I can't see where this rifle could possibly be better besides price. The $100 or so more gives you HUNDREDS more worth of value with the T3.

If are the sort to buy something, hang on to it for a while, then the Tikka is the better choice.

If like me, you like to tinker to no end and not leave anything alone, the Savage is way better.

Quality, accuracy, stock fit - both give you very good value and are both very accurate.

Then you might also throw the Rem SPS into the mix just for S&G's.

If you can, pick them up, cycle them, shoulder them and see what fits you the best. Any will be a good choice.

Savage is no doubt the better value, and probably the more accurate gun. They're cheaply assembled and the (synthetic) stocks suck, but they're built right where it counts. The tolerances around the action are extremely tight - there've been folks measure the average tolerances of the common rifles today, and Browning and Savage are always the most consistent and tight. It shows, too- read the reviews, the common theme is always 'for such ugly guns they really can shoot'

People who diss the AccuTrigger - I have to doubt if they've ever actually owned one, or know what a good trigger is supposed to feel like. The accutrigger on my Savage has a much superior feel then even the 40x target trigger on my Remington XR-100.

That said, given your two choices I'd go Tikka. It's been a while since I've owned a tikka, and I honestly cannot stand the synthetic Savage stocks. Really, I'd prefer a laminate or walnut Savage, or a mid-to-high end Remington, or a used Sako over any tikka. And I'd take a close look at the new Weatherby Vanguards

go with the tikka t3. i own two and there the most accurate rifles i have ever owned, straight from the box. takes five minutes to adjust the trigger and costs nothing. you can spend your tinkering money on another rifle.

I just bought a T3 Lite SS in 270wsm, and I am very happy with it so far, it's a very nice shooter, groups pretty good, I am happy with it for the price. I don't have a Savage in a comparable cal so I can't comment on them, but I would definitely recommend the Tikka...

Tikka....
Had my reservations about my T3 light stainless.. but after a few rounds... I was the happiest I had ever been with a rifle purchase. I have tried many other peoples rifles, and have a few of my own... and hands down, the Tikka is by far the best rifle for the price.
There was a guy at the range one day who was boasting about his rifle, and all the work he had done to it.. I let him shoot my Tikka and he asked how much I paid the gunsmith...
" I didnt.. thats factory buddy!" i just added a scope!

I would have said savage 3 years ago until I started shooting TIKKAs, and sold my 10 fp and 116.
Tikka all the way even in accuracy they are amazing rifles for the price.
My Varminters and Tactical rifle will run with any gun, and are very predictable rifles.

I do like both quite abit but I find the action on the Tikka's are so much more smooth then the Savages and the Stocks have a better feel IMHO. I think Savage has alot of guns bet in the area of triggers with the accutrigger.
Savage also are priced better if you are a guy on a budget like many of us CGN'ers

Cheers!!

Wow,that was easy, thank you for your response everyone .I was leaning towards the tikka myself,it sure is nice to have the input from people who have shot both.

This is my plan

Tikka T3 syn/ss .308
Bushnell Elite 4200 Firefly
Optilock base & rings

Thanx again,Jamie

Jamie......Great Choice:cool:
However...do yourself a Favour & pick up a set of Talley One piece Lightweight rings (Corlanes Sports sells them) instead of the Optilocks(1/4 the weight, 1/3 the price) Having owned a few Tikkas and used Optilocks on them all, I eventually went to the Talleys.
Now take that $150 Bucks you'll save and add it onto the 4200.....

Bingo ! Now you can slap a Leupold on that Tikka and never look back
You will be much happier in the Long run ;)
Good Luck !

I put Talley's on my T3's also.

Prosper....One can only assume you have never felt the trigger on a T3/Sako 75 if think the Accutrigger is crisper and lighter. I IN FACT do own both like I said and I'm not BS'ing like you suggested.

Explain to me the purpose of the pre trigger or what ever Savage chooses to call it since you are an authority on Savage's.:p

My vote is for the Tikka T3. I have 2 in (270WSM) the LS version, and a buddy of mine has 1 in a LS, 1 in a Varmint SS and 1 in the Tactical. (I just about bought a Varmint SS in 243, but got a sweet deal on a lightly used Sako m75 SS instead.). All the T3's are sweet shooting, tight grouping rifles...even with factory ammo. We been shooting with handloads for a few of the calibers with even better results..(thanks BigRedd-270WSM load)

Tikka has a silky smooth action, beautiful lines, and yes a bit of polymer for parts. As for the Savage, I heard they are a good shooting rifle...but butt ugly for my tastes, and I dont care for he Accu-trigger either.

Here are my T3's, 1st one is the one the wife (then fiance took over in the fall of 2004, so I bought another inDec. 2004 for me!), with Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 BC reticle with factory Winchester Supreme 140gr. Accubonds)

2nd T3 LS with Leupold VX3 4.5x14x40 BC reticle (reloads 140gr. Accubonds)

This is a pic of a sweet T3 Varmint SS in 22-250 with Swarvorski scope.

So, as you can tell- Go TIKKA- OR GO HOME ! lol
Even better, would be GO SAKO!!! in a m75 SS or the new Grey Wolf.
Good luck in your decision.

Hey MP, my next T3 will look a lot like you camo'd one. I'm selling the Savage I painted in Winter White Predator and going to do the paint job on the T3 in 243. That will put 4 T3's in my safe. No room for the Savage.
