Savage Palma Rifles

The action itself doesn't have as much to do with accuracy as the barrel. With a custom target rifle you get to pick the barrel, chamber, trigger and a stock that fits you. With the Savage you get what you get and hope it fits you or you widdle it down until it does.
I think the Savage Palma rifles are a step in the right direction for an entry level target rifle shooter that doesn't want to spend $4000 or better on a custom rifle. I doubt the barrel an the Savage would be a limiting factor for an entry level shooter when there are so many other things to learn about long range shooting.

I think Maynard is basically bang on. Savage makes some very good rifles and some that are more "monday" rifles. I have seen mostly good with the Savage f-class and palma lines, but i have also seem some that were not great at all.

These Palma rifles are not cheap; when you figure in the cost of putting sights onto the rifle, I think you will find there are many excellent options out there in the way of used Target/Palma rifles.

It is indeed possible to build a purpose-built custom rifle for not much more than the retail cost of a Savage and with the right choices, you would have a rifle that stands a very good chance of being as good or better then the best Savage.

Buy the Savage, shoot it and compete with it. Then when the barrel starts loosing its accuracy, put a good custom barrel on it. By that time, you'll know what to look for and get exactly what you need. Just my 2 cents :)

lol I thought this said 'Salvage Plasma Rifles' on first glance... With a huge smile on my face I actually ran through my finances in my head to see if I could scrounge thousands... Then I figured it out. :( lol

Typical Palma rifles weigh 3 to 4 pounds more than the Savage. Kind of amazing given the Savage's 30" barrel and 50" OAL.

Typical Palma rifles must weigh under 6.5 kg or 14.3 pound until all the ICFRA rules are adopted in which the rifle weight becomes unlimited. There is no minimum weight. The rifle is weighed complete with bolt, sights, handstop and rifle rest bipod as it will be shot, less the sling. So by the time you take a 11.5 lbs Savage Palma rifle add front and rear sights, a hand stop and the little rifle rest bipod (not for shooting off of) you are starting to get closer to that 14.3 lbs max limit.
