Hey guys, had a great experience shooting this new rifle for the first time on the weekend. It was a barrel break-in/sight-in/late season groundhog hunt combo and all were a success. :) Wasn't overly optimistic I'd even see one, but about 7+ kms of hiking yielded exactly 2 opportunities. First one a direct hit from about 150 yards, second bolted from over 200 yards away..never even got a shot off at him. We'll call him "brood stock" for next season.

Anyhow, I had 2 ammo. options to try, both Hornady. Sighted-in with 55 grain. V-Max and stuck with it when I saw how well it was doing. I had 53 grain SuperPerformance on hand too. That will get dusted-off for some target shooting in the coming weeks. Can't see it doing better than the 55 though. :)

Thanks to Jerry from Mystic Precision for suggesting the Burris bases, worked like a charm...an nicer than the Leupold ones I had on hand.

When saving for this set-up, I didn't find too many good photos of them online. As tired as I was, I tried to get a couple good ones for desktop photos. Thanks for looking...just had to share!

Thanks Tyler~the first rifle I've ever bought new, and my first centerfire. I'm pretty pumped about it. Maybe not a "traditional" hunting rifle, but for a varmint gun...I thought it would be fun. Turns-out it is!

Sorry for the delayed response...too much work, and too much time spent trying to get out fishing. (didn't work :confused: ) Got the rifle at Epps, I'd been watching the site for a while. Nothing...nothing...one would show-up, then GONE a day or so later...then nothing again. So, when I saw one come-up, I made the run-up to Orillia. Very pleased with the price and service.

Scope is a Millett TRS-1. In my opinion, the best scope in this magnification range for the money. Great optics, great reticle, etc. The rail on the rings~no, no laser or flashlight plans. Le Baron (Markham) had the Millett low rings WITH that feature for 1/2 the price of the identical ones without it. Easy decision.

As for "popping my cherry"~I've certainly shot .223 enough, but the rimfire shooter in me is conditioned to think every outing=100+ shots taken. Two seasons of groundhog hunting in S. Ontario has shown me a busy day might be 10 shots, and if the one I hit on my first outing is any indication.... .223 is a MUCH more dynamic caliber than .17 HMR when you're varmint hunting. I like. :)
 
Congrats on a great rifle. I have the same rifle and have been shooting the 55 grn Vmax for about a year now. Absolutley stellar accuarcy inside 200 (haven't tried further .......yet!) I'm sure you'll be quite pleased and want to hold onto it for a long time.
 
Sounds like you're set on the 55 grainers~what others have you tried? I picked-up a couple of boxes of the 53 grain SuperPerformance, but it's hard to imagine they'll shoot better. Sadly, the groundhogs have started their nap for the most part, but I'll be sure to get this rifle out for some practice between now and next spring.

That was Plan B if I couldn't get the Precision 10. Almost bought one in fact, and was getting close to again when mine got listed for sale. I wouldn't hesitate one bit in buying that.
