Starting to think about getting another rifle down the road. Will have to wait untill the new year likely as I think I may have pushed my luck with the misses the last bit with the cz and the sako and the coach gun. But anyway, I already hunt with a .308 and a 300wsm (among others) but am thinking about a 260rem. in a savage predator hunter x1. I have never owned a 260 or a heavy barrel or a savage. I'm thinking mostly for paper but the odd Vancouver Island black tail and black bear would be on the menu as well. Just wondering if anyone has any input on this cartridge's capability or on this rifle. Any input would be helpfull.
Thanks

I can't comment on the .260 Cal, but can on the rifle (if it is the Predator Max 1 your inquiring about)

I bought a Savage Pred Max 1 in 22-250 off the EE last year w/only a box through it. Certainly shoots like a typical Savage with a 10 shot grouping @ 100 yrds easily into 1" or less, if i do my part. Cycling the bolt is not as buttery smooth as my Tikka T3 in .204R, but really wasn't at time of purchase and still isn't a concern on my end.

The Accu-Stock & Accu-Trigger are nice features, however I'm not convinced the Accu-Stock is the be-all & end-all it's touted as. Only reason I say that is I have a Savage Predator 10 in .243Win without the Accu-Stock and it shoots equally as nice, but it is finicky on Gr range, which is more the odd twist rate Savage chose than anything.

With a 6.5-24x50 and a Harris mounted, it certainly isn't a light rig by any means. Thankfully it's a stand gun and i don't need to carry it for long periods. I'm going to hazard a guess at somewhere around 10+ lbs. however it is a work horse in the field and stands up well in the winter months. Something that was high on my criteria for a main first 'Yote rig. I had thought about selling/trading it in for the same model in either .243 Win or 6.5M Creedmore, but still yet undecided there.

Another CGN'er "sobo4303" has the same model in .243Win. I don't think I've ever seen him post anything negative about his here or over on the predhuntcan forum. Hopefully he'll chime in and offer a second perspective.

Overall i don't think you can go wrong with this model. Certainly not the prettiest, but it gets the job done out of the box very well.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I'm wondering if the extra weight of the heavy barrel is worth the accuracy. I would like to reach out to the 600 mark (as I think that will tax my ability) but may try for further on paper.
Most of my shots on deer and bears on the island are under 200 yards mostly because of the way I hunt but would like to do more sitting on cut blocks that would offer long shots on game.
As far as the .260rem, I am wondering about bullet performance of .264 bullets. Will they be tough enough for the 50 yard shots but still perform well enough at 400 or 600 yards to responsibly take black bear size game? I reload so I can use whatever is appropriate just not familiar with the caliber. I use a .308 on everything now so don't worry about it out to 400. Just looking for a longer range tack driver that can send hunting rounds out there accuratly.

Both the Predator & Max 1 are listed around the 8.25/8.5lb mark. No doubt the medium profile barrels coming into play. IMO a heavier rig makes a much more stable platform to shoot from, especially from a bipod over looking large area, but that is just my thought ymmv.

Look here for .264 bullet data - .264 Cal Thread

Choose your bullet, and there will be absolutely NO problem with the 260's performance, close in or at a distance.

I would take a Partition, TTSX, Scirocco II, or an Accubond and hunt with confidence.
Anything in the 115 - 140 grain range will be great on game right out past 400 meters.
