I was looking at the frontier firearms site at the Savages they have for sale. Specifically the "Savage 10 FCP HS Precision Stock 308" and the "Savage 10FCP McMillan". Does anyone know why the McMillan is almost $500 more than the HS precision? I'm guessing it is a different stock, but other than that I'm not sure. Does this stock make it shoot considerably better? As well, I was looking to use this rifle out to about 800-1000 yards. Is this rifle accurate straight out of the box? I will be handloading Berger 175gr VLD's in it. I'm not new to shooting, just new to precision shooting. Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

I hope I can help on this I just ordered my 10FCP from savage last week, the factory stock is nice but not anything close to a HS or McMillan, the Savage stock on the 10FCP has a wide fore stock / beaver tale but is lacking a palm swell. HS stocks are nice they do have both wide fore stock / beaver tale & palm swell, But McMillan is hands down the better stock of the 3 are they worth $500 more then the HS stock I think not maybe worth about $150 - $200 more, But it all depends on which McMillan they are using. if it's the money you are concerned about get the HS stock. as for me I would rather buy a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock before an HS Precision. but that's me I also love the McMillan but that's out of my price range.
You really need to handle them to decide. I have the 10FCP Mac and my buddy bought the 10FCP HS. He is a bigger guy (6'2" 220 pounds) and he loves the HS.. I am 5'8" and 190 and I felt the HS definitely wasn't for me. It is all personal preference though.
For me the Mac is worth the 500 bucks easily.

I bought a 10FP and agree with a previous poster that the factory stock wasn't up to much - OK for a all weather hunter but not what you want on a precision rig. I has a HS on my R5 and wasn't totally into it so I went to the Choate which actually works really well especially when one considers the price. I have a MCM A5 on another rifle and that is hands down the better but, like you, I found the price too much at the time I bought the Savage.

Most stores will only have the McM and HS separated by a couple of hundred dollars.
Both the HS and McM will do a great job. I find the HS to be a better fit for my style of shooting. Others like the McM. I have shouldered a few B&C Medalists and it was a nice fit too.
So get the stock that suits your body shape and style of shooting.
ALL will need to be properly bedded to do their best work.
