Savage Question

Use a bullet and a fired case to measure throat length and save your $50. I am obsessive compulsive about measuring throats and and soft seating a bullet with a fired case then chambering it(with a slighty crimped neck) works as well as ANY tool I have used.

Thanks for the link and throat info guys. Right now I load to the maximium magazine length, which is much longer than factory.

Throback i tried that with my savage and i think the max mag length is 2.840..when i did that it was actually jamming into the rifling on my savage..and sure enough when i used the old bullet in the knotched cartridge trick it was 2.825 to the rifling so i guess you can't always use the magazine as the benchmark? i hear conflicting reports that wedging it in the rifling increases pressure while other's say it totally fine to and some guys do load them that way...it's all so confusing! ahhh!! haha guess you just need to be cautious and work up all loads carefully watching for pressure signs.

OK thanks. I'd a thought that Savage would not make the magazine that long. I will try the loose bullet thing and see. But so far so good with the way I am doing it.
