Savage Rascal... in Pink

A few weeks back there was a thread with some recommendations on rifles for little girls; one of the popular suggestions was a Savage Rascal. I've been looking for a decent .22 for my oldest daughter and she really wanted a pink rifle, so after some more reading up I decided to bite.

The Savage is especially appropriate since my first rifle was a Lakefield Mark I, Lakefield at that time not being owned by Savage; but since then of course has been bought by Savage. So it's sort of a Family Tradition, if I may quote 'ole Hank Jr.

It showed up today - note that I can't try this out until I give it to her for her birthday at the end of May so sayeth my better half - but without shooting it, I'd say the recommendations are right on. This thing is LIGHT, which was important - she was complaining about the weight of other rifles I had her on (my Lakefield MK 1, my Dad's Winchester 67A, my Nylon 66 and a 9422 - also a Ruger MKIII but that's of course somewhat different). The Nylon 66 she could handle but I do think there's validity in a single shot bolt for the basics. My opinion only, no criticism to others (and as you can read, I've had her on other rifles). But this is practically Daisy Red Ryder light; and the LOP is PERFECT for her. Shorter than my MK I by far; and lighter.

I love the peep sight as well; based on watching her shoot other types of sights I believe this will be a better fit at this stage.

Anyway here it is - and thanks to those who suggested it. When I get her out I'll toss out some more.

Little girls and pink guns... too cute! My youngest daughter loves her pinky build... and she loves going to the range with dad and having her own legitimate station... she starts hunting with us this year and says she is carrying her pinky into the woods and embarassing some grouse and bunnies!

My daughter is 4 months old and I want to buy her one. LOL! It'll be a quite a few years before she picks up a gun, but I cant wait to take her out. Im sure she'll be just as excitted as you to go shooting. Have Fun!

my daughter just turned six on new years day. bought her a pink laminate crickett before we were home from the hospital 6 years ago. she just started shooting it last summer. it's still a little long for her but we manage by putting it in the leadsled. had to buy her all the pink accessories to go with it, pink safety glasses, pink ear muffs, pink trigger lock, pink rifle case....... we only went out a hand full of times last summer but i think we'll be going out a lot more this summer, she's been asking to go out in the back with me when i go out but with all the winter clothes on she can't really shoulder the gun. have fun, i do.
i think i'm going to pick up a T/C hot shot for my sons first gun. when i finally find a camo one......

Proud dad! Nothing like getting out shooting and hunting with your kids... Mine are mostly grown now, but they all say that some of their fondest memories are of hunting and shooting. I am hoping for 2 or 3 decades more of connecting with kids and grand kids in the outdoors. Good for you.

i take her hunting with me but she only lasts a few minutes then it's time to go home. christ almost an hour to get her ready when it's cold out, she lasts 15mins in the tree or blind then i get to bring her back. last spring i brought her out opening day for turkeys, had them gobbling and working our way and could see them in the next field but it was time to go home. could be worse and she wouldn't want to go periode i guess........ still take every time she wants to go

With kids you have to work on their individual time table... My son shot his first grouse at 4 with an HB20 pistol at 20 yards (pretty proud moment... I was pretty shocked when the bird went down)... He has hunted ever since and always had the desire to stay out longer... My oldest daughter had zero interest of patience until she was twelve... So we just did other stuff until she was ready (she liked to camp and fish)... My youngest daughter has enjoyed shooting since she was eight, but not until this year has she expressed any interest in hunting... And now she talks about it a lot... Her pink gun got her excited for new moving targets... I think in general it is best to hold them back a bit rather than push them too soon... My bussy was pretty intense with his son and now the boy has no interest in the outdoors (too many bad memories), you don't want that... My eldest moved on to other interests, but still goes out with me once in a while... My middle wants to hunt and shoot every day he is not mountain climbing, ice climbing, AT skiing (or otherwise scaring his mother to death)... And my youngest is my main fishing buddy and is a little range rat...

that's part of the reason i haven't brought her out back with me this winter, she'd get cold and hungry and not enjoy herself. i'll start taking her out next to the barn again once bikini season hit again...LOL
